INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts are nearing kickoff of their regular season opener on Sunday, as they host the Baltimore Ravens at Lucas Oil Stadium at 1:00 p.m. ET on CBS.
With it being the opening game of the season, both teams are in good shape in terms of injuries. Still, there are three players who have already been declared out before gamedays.
The Colts downgraded linebacker and core special teamer Austin Ajiake (hamstring) from questionable to out on Saturday. He practiced on Wednesday and Thursday, but not Friday.
The Ravens ruled out linebacker Teddye Buchanan (knee) and defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike (neck) on Friday. Both players suffered season-ending injuries last year and are close to returning, but not quite there yet. Wide receiver Deontez Walker (groin) was also listed as questionable and ultimately made inactive.
COLTS' INACTIVES
- LB Austin Ajiake (hamstring)
- CB Johnathan Edwards
- RB DJ Giddens
- DE George Gumbs Jr.
- QB Riley Leonard (Emergency QB3)
- IOL Dalton Tucker
Without Ajiake, the Colts have linebackers Akeem Davis-Gaither, Jaylon Carlies, CJ Allen, Bryce Boettcher, and Tahj Chambers available on Sunday.
The rest of the inactives are healthy scratches, most notably second-year running back DJ Giddens. He was active for just nine games last season as a rookie because he didn't play special teams and didn't have a role on passing downs. That appears to still be the case.
As a result, the Colts will have just two running backs: Jonathan Taylor and Seth McGowan.
The Colts are also rolling with just one of their two rookie edge defenders, making Caden Curry active over George Gumbs Jr. Curry joins Laiatu Latu, Arden Key, Jaylahn Tuimoloau, and Micheal Clemons as active edge defenders.
On Saturday, the Colts elevated cornerback Kenneth Harris to the active roster from the practice squad for Sunday's game. He gets the nod over Johnathan Edwards. Harris will revert to the practice squad after the game.
RAVENS' INACTIVES
- LB Teddye Buchanan (knee)
- QB Joe Fagnano (Emergency QB3)
- G Emery Jones
- DT Nnamdi Madubuike (neck)
- CB Chandler Rivers
- WR Elijah Sarratt
- WR Devontez Walker (groin)
Buchanan and Mudubuike's absence is a big loss for Baltimore's defense, but the team was already used to playing without them. Madubuike played just two games last season before his injury, and Buchanan was a rookie who logged 651 snaps before he was lost in Week 15.
Broderick Washington Jr. is Madubuike's backup on the Ravens' depth chart, and Trenton Simpson is ahead of Buchanan.
Madubuike had 30.0 sacks and 42 tackles for loss since 2020, and Buchanan had 93 tackles as a rookie.
