Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn, Adam Peters are confident in the roster ahead of training camp

No position group has been under the microscope more than the wide receiver room, but ahead of the first practice of training camp set to begin today, the time is now for the Washington Commanders to address those concerns.

While veteran Terry McLaurin knows that someone "will step up" in 2026, general manager Adam Peters has reason to be confident in the room ahead of next season after also pointing to McLaurin's leadership, the draft capital invested in the room along with the free agent market "bringing in some real good competition."

"What it does is create great competition and great competition will -- the cream will rise to the top," Peters added. "I'm confident that those guys will take a step up."

Yet the evaluations about possible additions continues.

Everything is under evaluation, even a possible target's social media activity.

JP Finlay of NBC Sports indirectly crafted a question to general manager Adam Peters about the ongoing Brandon Aiyuk saga that has gradually shifted away from a possible signing in Washington to a question whether he ever plays another down in the NFL. Yet Aiyuk has continued his social media trends, including on Tuesday in two posts that mocked San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan following his car accident. Peters admitted that "we look at everything" when evaluating a player's fit, though admitted social media activity may not be "a huge part of it. Usually."

"We want to make sure it's the right player to be in our locker room, in our bloodstream and in our culture," Peters added.

One player who did check those boxes is Rasul Douglas, whose signing was made official this week after the team announced corresponding roster moves. It's part of the reason why Dan Quinn feels the depth in the cornerback room, a one-time major concern, is a "deep group" heading into training camp. The question may not be about ability, rather who fits where, with training camp into preseason a chance to add that answer.

"I think kind of the secret sauce is how do we fit in?," Quinn pondered before noting it will "take some time" to learn that answer.

Quinn will take that time to put guys in different situations, like two-point conversions in Wednesday's practice coupled with two and four minute situations, last plays, and field goal situations among other scenarios. Yet execution will tell the tale of how successful a camp will set a team up eyeing a return to the postseason for the first time since 2024.

Whether Washington ultimately adds to the roster remains a question that will ultimately be answered over the next month as general manager Adam Peters noted the team is always evaluating beyond possible 53-man roster additions. Washington has a handful of breakout candidates, whether it be in the front seven, secondary or on offense, alongside a rookie class looking to stick out while balancing a bigger workload into the fall. Yet finalizing the roster will ultimately be the goal for Washington as Peters detailed what he's evaluating over the next month.

"We're watching practice during practice. We're watching the tape after practice. We're meeting on it. We're meeting on how they do in the classroom, how they're learning, how they're understanding their positions, how versatile they are. Can they play more than one position? Can they be more versatile on game day? Do they play special teams? Does that help their roster value?"
