The Washington Commanders find themselves in a string of constant attention surrounding wide receive Brandon Aiyuk
By now, the background of the situation is clear: despite still being under contract by the San Francisco 49ers, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk wants to play for the Washington Commanders. And he isn't exactly trying to hide it anymore.
From social media rants calling the Niners 'dumb' for paying him money to not play during the 2025 season, then frustration that the front office won't release him from his contract. Now, it's turned to Aiyuk's interest in his next destination: Washington.
The social media activity have become a daily storyline for Aiyuk to get through the final lull period of the offseason, yet on Wednesday his stance became crystal clear.
"Tell them boys cut me today and I'll sign with the Commanders tomorrow," Aiyuk said on his Instagram.
The continued fallout hasn't done him any favors in the Niners' camp, whether it be former or current players. While former cornerback Richard Sherman pointed to the Niners' financial commitment to Aiyuk, tight end George Kittle poured more fuel on the fire by saying "you have fun with all that comes with [Aiyuk]."
But as Kittle alluded to, the Niners have no incentive to move on from Aiyuk if the only concern is media attention. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported on Thursday that Aiyuk may have to sign on a veterans minimum once he does eventually become available. But after he posted a video of him dumping cash in his closet in another shot at San Francisco, money likely isn't the driving force behind the constant stream of noise.
What is clear is that now that the June 1 deadline has passed with still no resolution, Aiyuk is now doing everything in his power to speed up the process in hopes of actually playing football again.
The question now is the one that remained one month ago, two months ago and even six months ago - when will the saga end? Time will tell if the Niners grow tired of the constant noise and opt to make a roster move toward the start of training camp, as ESPN's Adam Schefter noted was a likely outcome. But it's clear that Aiyuk is doing everything possible to speed up his timeline.
General manager Adam Peters, head coach Dan Quinn and quarterback Jayden Daniels have all declined to comment on Aiyuk and his ongoing situation, a sensible direction given he still remains under contract with another team.
