Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has repeatedly made clear he wants to play for the Washington Commanders in 2026
The Brandon Aiyuk saga has had near daily updates over the last two weeks with the speculation steady around whether a resolution will materialize sooner rather than later.
Aiyuk began taking to Instagram to voice his displeasure with the San Francisco 49ers and the front office, at one time calling them dumb for paying him without playing for now over one year. Now, it's shifted toward Aiyuk becoming increasingly obvious in his interest in becoming a Commander, posting a video on Monday as he yells, 'go Commanders! Go Commanders! Go Commanders!' Shortly after, Aiyuk posted the iconic photo of Mark Rypien hoisting the Lombardi Trophy following the franchise's Super Bowl win in 1992.
It isn't a surprise given Aiyuk has seen his status remain in limbo for months, though for a 49ers organization that once looked to finalize a divorce via trade, the ongoing social media saga only dwindles whatever value that is. With no incentive to release Aiyuk until the start of the regular season, it remains a waiting game as to when a resolution ultimately does materialize.
It's also a sentiment that San Francisco tight end George Kittle echoed during an appearance on Netflix's Pardon My Take on Monday while adding, 'do you really care to answer questions' when asked whether ongoing media attention would impact the roster decision. Kittle went on to add "you have fun with all that comes with [Aiyuk]" when talking about the situation, one of several subtle shots at the wide receiver who also seemingly ghosted his teammates along with the front office.
As for Washington, whether a resolution materializes before the start of training camp, which was announced on Monday, that also remains a question mark with the next month a chance for the front office to evaluate any potential last-minute additions to the roster. With all the attention on whether the front office has done enough to provide weapons for quarterback Jayden Daniels, Aiyuk's situation remains the most pressing storyline for Washington.
The question may be whether the front office opts to make any other moves if the Aiyuk saga drags closer to preseason, but the interest at least from one side has been made crystal clear through June. Even with San Francisco's insistence on a trade, it's Washington who holds the leverage as they wait out the saga and others like Stefon Diggs still available.
General manager Adam Peters, head coach Dan Quinn and quarterback Jayden Daniels have all deflected questions when asked about Aiyuk's status, though Daniels left the door open when asked if he may workout with anyone other than the Commanders over the next month.
"We'll see. You guys will probably see on social media or something."
