The Washington Commanders have officially announced the signing of veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs, along with two starters set to return after being injured ahead of camp
Ahead of Friday's training camp practice, the Washington Commanders made their latest acquisition official to add the much needed veteran piece to round out the 2026 wide receiver room.
Two days after news of his addition broke, the Washington Commanders have now officially announced the free agent signing of wide receiver Stefon Diggs. After stopping by at his alma mater, the University of Maryland, for the first practice of fall camp on Wednesday, the Montgomery County native was spotted inside the Commanders' facility on Thursday with his addition to Washington roster drawing near consensus praise as the latest weapon available to quarterback Jayden Daniels.
The Commanders were linked to the Maryland native for the bulk of the last six weeks as the tide began to turn in the wide receiver market, now joining a room led by Terry McLaurin and rookie Antonio Williams with several pieces looking to prove themselves through preseason.
To make room for Diggs, the Commanders announced that offensive guard Tyler Cooper, who arrived as an undrafted free agent last year, was released.
Yet that was not the only bit of good news after the team also announced that cornerback Trey Amos was removed from the physically unable to perform list, setting the stage for the second-year impact piece to make his first return to practice of the offseason.
Amos, a former second round pick in the 2025 Draft out of Ole Miss, saw his stellar rookie season cut short after he fractured his fibula in the Week 10 loss to the Detroit Lions. It marks a welcomed development for Amos looking to return to form with a chance to become the top cornerback in the room, but the good news is the room has additional depth to alleviate the strain on the second-year cornerback to return to form in week one. The Commanders signed both Fabian Moreau and Rasul Douglas over the last month to upgrade the depth in the room alongside Mike Sainristil and Amik Robertson.
Washington also announced that punter Tress Way has also returned from the physically unable to perform list alongside Sainristil. Way was sidelined at the start of training camp due to what head coach Dan Quinn said was a pectoral injury, leading the team to sign veteran punter Matt Haack to fill the vacancy at the position.
Defensive end Dorance Armstrong, who was also placed on the physically unable to perform list ahead of camp, was also activated ahead of Friday's practice.
The Commanders are set to shift the attention from training camp to preseason beginning next week with a joint practice scheduled next Wednesday, Aug. 12 against the Miami Dolphins prior to the first preseason game scheduled at Northwest Stadium on Friday.
