At last, the Washington Commanders have added another piece to the wide receiver room with a hometown reunion official.
Veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs is inking with the Commanders on a one-year deal worth up to $12 million, likely completing the offseason additions at the position after months of being linked to the veteran free agent.
Diggs now joins a wide receiver room led by veteran Terry McLaurin ahead of his eighth season with the team, while the team's lone draft pick on day two of the 2026 NFL Draft was spent on Clemson product Antonio Williams, who projects more as a slot receiver ahead of his rookie season.
Yet the arrival for Diggs comes after weeks of consistent reports about his interest in the hometown team with both the Commanders and Baltimore Ravens linked to the four-time All Pro selection, while the Kansas City Chiefs were viewed as a possibility at points in the offseason.
Now, the 6-foot receiver will officially head to Ashburn looking to be the impact piece needed at the position.
Diggs is coming off his first Super Bowl appearance in what proved to be his lone season with the New England Patriots, notching 1,013 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 85 catches. The veteran has also eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards in seven of his last eight NFL seasons with the lone exception being in 2024 when he was sidelined midway through the regular season after suffering a torn ACL.
The potential signing of Diggs also became a growing possibility as it became increasingly apparent that Brandon Aiyuk, who has yet to be released by the San Francisco 49ers, was unlikely to head to the Commanders despite his continued insistence on social media. Diggs, meanwhile, saw his court cases resolved as the NFL closed their investigation on the Good Counsel and University of Maryland product, paving the way for the 32 year old to find a new home in his 12th season in the NFL.
The addition gives the Commanders a proven weapon to address arguably the final remaining question of the offseason. Tight end Chig Okonkwo is also expected to be a key part of the Commanders' passing attack.
Washington is set to kick off the preseason slate next week with a joint practice set for next Wednesday, August 12 against the Miami Dolphins ahead of the first preseason game next Friday, August 14 as the local product looks to live up to the chance at becoming an impact addition.
