The Washington Commanders will have a trio of notable names back on offense, yet one will be sidelined in the week five matchup against the New York Giants

The Washington Commanders will have a handful of pieces back on Sunday, though they will be without a key piece on offense.

Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed that wide receiver Stefon Diggs is inactive in week five, marking his first game missed in 2026. Diggs did not practice on either Wednesday or Thursday with what the team ruled as a hamstring injury, dealing a blow to a room that has already been hit in recent weeks. Whether veteran Terry McLaurin is available remains a question as Quinn pointed a final determination being made later on Friday.

Yet there is good news after Quinn confirmed what offensive coordinator David Blough revealed on Thursday: quarterback Jayden Daniels is set to return as the starting quarterback in week five. Daniels went out midway through the week two loss against the Dallas Cowboys with a dislocated elbow, though avoided surgery to make a return in 2026 possible. He is one of three players set to return as right guard Sam Cosmi, who was also injured in the week two loss, has been cleared from concussion and is expected to return as the starter. Running back Rachaad White, who suffered a shoulder injury in the week three win against the Seattle Seahawks yet returned in the second half, is also set to return on Sunday after missing one game.

The absence of Diggs and question surrounding McLaurin adds to subtle questions at the position with news that wide receiver Jaylin Lane has been placed on injured reserve, paving an opportunity for Luke McCaffrey to step up in his third season with the franchise. McCaffrey has been a healthy scratch for three of Washington's first four games in 2026.

The return of Cosmi may be as impactful as Daniels' return given the struggles that the interior offensive line has faced to begin the 2026 season, yet there is also another move in the trenches.

Nick Allegretti, who did not participate in Thursday's practice, has been benched with Lucas Patrick stepping in as the starting center moving forward. It marks a deflating reality for Washington with the offensive line experiment showing signs of concern through August despite Quinn and general manager Adam Peters dismissing the outside noise.

The Commanders will look to avoid a 1-4 start and 0-3 against the rest of the NFC East when they take on the New York Giants at Northwest Stadium on Oct. 11. Kickoff is set for 1 PM ET on FOX.
