Ravaged by injuries and searching for a spark, the Washington Commanders may have no choice but to turn back to their former third-round pick before it's too late.
The Washington Commanders head into week five of the NFL season in a pretty precarious position. Sitting at 1-3, the team is coming off a winnable game that slipped away against the Indianapolis Colts and now faces a de facto must-win game against the New York Giants at home.
After dropping early-season divisional games to the Eagles and Cowboys, the Commanders cannot afford to fall to 0-3 in the NFC East, especially with a brutal upcoming stretch featuring the 49ers, another clash with Philadelphia, and the Los Angeles Rams.
Compounding matters, the roster has been battered. The midweek injury report looks like a CVS receipt, with foundational pieces like Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs popping up with soft tissue concerns.
Coupled with the season-ending ankle injury to wide receiver Jaylin Lane, a wide receiver room that once looked robust is suddenly appearing surprisingly thin. Out of necessity, the team may be forced to turn back to one of its most scrutinized depth pieces: Luke McCaffrey, an oft-discussed misfire from the 2024 draft class.
A Puzzling Third Season
The Commanders' usage of him so far this season speaks volumes, and it’s officially do-or-die time for the former third-round pick.
Heading into his third season, McCaffrey’s production -- or lack thereof -- has been a constant topic of discussion. After a quiet rookie year where he started four games and hauled in 24 targets, McCaffrey seemed poised for a sophomore leap. He appeared in nine games for the Commanders in 2025, highlighted by a productive four-game stretch from Weeks three through six where he snagged three touchdowns.
He also carved out a niche as an effective kickoff returner, averaging 29.6 yards per return, which ranked second in the league.
At training camp, I personally witnessed strong showings where he consistently fought for contested catches and earned heavy work. But the offseason arrival of Stefon Diggs entirely changed the calculus, pushing McCaffrey down the pecking order.
Once considered a roster lock, McCaffrey surprisingly played deep into the Commanders' preseason finale against the Baltimore Ravens -- a spot typically reserved for fringe bubble players and longshots. It was a glaring indicator that his standing with the coaching staff had plummeted.
Since then, McCaffrey has been active for just one game (the Week 3 thriller against the Seattle Seahawks), logging zero offensive targets (though he did flash on special teams with three strong kick returns for 90 yards).
Are the Commanders back in the McCaffrey business? They might not have a choice -- especially if McLaurin and Diggs are sidelined this week.
A Team Ravaged With Injuries
While reports indicate Diggs has returned to practice in a promising sign, Friday’s final injury report will tell the real story. If both veterans are limited or ruled out, quarterback Jayden Daniels is going to need bodies, thrusting McCaffrey right back into the fire for a pivotal NFC East showdown.
This might be McCaffrey’s final audition to prove his worth in Washington. It’s becoming increasingly evident that his elite kickoff-returning chops aren't enough to secure a weekly helmet, with other options handling those duties.
Can McCaffrey pull off a career revival when the lights are brightest? Or is he destined to be remembered as another missed asset from a disappointing 2024 draft class?
