Shy Tuttle and Deatrich Wise become the fourth and fifth players to agree to an extension with the Washington Commanders

The Big Doug and Carmi Show

With free agency days away and over 30 free agents set to hit the market, the Washington Commanders have retained two more contributors ahead of the start of the legal tampering window beginning on Monday.

The Washington Commanders agreed to a contract extension with a pair of players on Wednesday afternoon in defensive tackle Shy Tuttle and defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. Both have agreed to one year extensions, per Adam Schefter of ESPN. Defensive end Drake Jackson became the third defensive lineman to agree to an extension.

Wise, Jackson and Tuttle become the fourth, fifth and sixth players to agree to an extension with the Commanders this offseason alongside punter Tress Way and offensive linemen Nick Allegretti and Andrew Wylie.

Tuttle, who went undrafted in 2019, began his 2025 season by being released by the the Carolina Panthers before signing with the Tennessee Titans the following day. He went on to start in one game for the Titans and made ten appearances where he registered 11 total tackles, but his arrival in Washington was made possible after he was released on Dec. 20 with the Commanders claiming him two days later. Tuttle then made appearances in each of the last two games where he registered four tackles, proving to be a valuable waiver claim for general manager Adam Peters.

Tuttle will now re-join the interior defensive line rotation that will return Daron Payne for one more year alongside Javon Kinlaw and Jer'Zhan Newton in 2026.

As for Wise, this marks a chance at redemption after suffering a season-ending quad injury in the week two road loss against the Green Bay Packers. Wise initially signed a one year, $5 million contract last March to mark his second team in his NFL career.

A former fourth round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Wise began his career with the New England Patriots where he appeared in every game in all but two of his nine seasons with the organization. Wise posted a career-best 7.5 sacks in 2022 and has recorded at least four sacks in five of his nine seasons, including at least 40 tackles in four of his final five seasons in New England.

Of course, Wise's production in 2025 was limited to just four total tackles in less than two full games with his return now giving the Commanders another piece to address a front seven in need of dire upgrades this offseason.

"The size and the strength that Deatrich plays with on the edge, that's a real thing," head coach Dan Quinn said following news of his season ending injury.

Jackson is coming off his first season with the team after being placed on IR one day after being signed as he recovered from patellar tendon surgery from the 2023 season. Jackson was activated for the final month of the season to make his debut, while he'll now return in 2026 to bolster the Commanders' depth.
