The Washington Commanders have a need to fill in the wide receiver room with a former San Francisco 49ers receiver named the best fit
The most pressing need for the Washington Commanders is not too hard to figure out given question remains about what the wide receiver room will ultimately materialize into.
Wide receiver Antonio Williams proved to be the second of the two top-100 picks that the front office entered the draft with, providing a shifty and dependable receiver capable of taking over the slot while general manager Adam Peters noted the 5-foot-11.5 addition is capable of lining up as the Z receiver.
Yet the Commanders need at least one more to add to the top of the room, and after CBS Sports pointed to the wide receiver room as the biggest remaining need ahead of the 2026 regular season, they also pointed to former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings as the best fit to address the need.
Jennings was listed as the best fit for four teams with Washington joining the Minnesota Vikings, Indianapolis Colts and Kansas City Chiefs.
"The Commanders were in on both Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs but ended up with neither. Brandon Aiyuk has been bandied about for months, but he's far from a sure thing," CBS Sports said of Washington's roster outlook. "Jennings would provide the needed size and toughness opposite Terry McLaurin and become a trusted option for Jayden Daniels."
The Commanders have not been an aggressive player in the Jennings race after the Minnesota Vikings reportedly hosted him on a two day visit this week. Ben Standig also reported that the Commanders have continued to monitor Jennings's market through the offseason while Yahoo pointed to Washington as a dark horse candidate for the "Plan B" option to his teammate, Brandon Aiyuk.
Jennings is arguably the most productive wide receiver still available midway through the offseason as he looks to cash in on two productive seasons in San Francisco after amassing 132 catches for 1,618 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns, in line for likely the best contract at the position among available players.
Jennings, a former seventh round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, has spent all five seasons with the 49ers where he's totaled nearly 2,600 yards and 22 touchdowns.
Of course, Washington has been linked to Brandon Aiyuk all offseason with the expectation that a divorce with San Francisco will eventually materialize this offseason, though when that happens is unclear as general manager John Lynch has remained persistent that the 49ers are looking to complete a trade rather than release him.
