After suffering a foot injury on Friday, the Washington Commanders are now likely to face a long-term absence with DT Daron Payne now sidelined

Hours after the injury report revealed the Washington Commanders could have a largely healthy roster available in the primetime matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, the defense has been dealt a brutal blow nearly 48 hours before kickoff.

Defensive tackle Daron Payne is now expected to miss significant time after suffering a foot injury in practice on Friday with additional testing likely landing him on the injured reserve ahead on Sunday night. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported there is a possibility that Payne has played his last down in 2026, while the team has since shifted him from questionable to out on the injury report.

It marks a brutal development for Payne, who was a full participant in practice through the week. Payne has totaled seven tackles and one sack through an up-and-down 2026 season, his eighth with the organization. After drawing criticism for effort on a handful of plays during the first month of the regular season, Payne recorded the forced fumble against New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo in overtime in one of his handful of notable plays through six games.

Payne also drew buzz as a trade candidate earlier in the week with multiple teams reportedly keeping tabs on his market, but with the expectation that he will be placed on injured reserve and miss at least four games, that potential avenue is now off the table for Washington's front office. What that means for Payne's future beyond the 2026 season is also now complicated given Payne entered the season on a contract year for the second time during his tenure with the organization.

Through eight seasons with the organization, Payne has recorded 446 total tackles, 38 sacks, eight forced fumbles and one interception. 16 of his 38 career sacks came between the 2021 and 2022 regular seasons with Payne drawing criticism for lackluster play and stats over the last four seasons.

The absence of Payne marks the second defensive lineman not available at least week eight after the team previously announced tackle Javon Kinlaw will miss the upcoming game vs. Philadelphia. The potential season debut of Jer'Zhan Newton looms even larger now after he was one of four players to be ruled questionable on the final injury report.

The Commanders will look to now overcome the absence of both Payne and Kinlaw in the trenches when they face a short-handed Philadelphia Eagles offense in the second and final meeting of the regular season between the two divisional foes. Kickoff is set for 8:20 PM ET at Northwest Stadium in week eight.
