The Washington Commanders have a big absence to fill in its running back rotation with news that Jeremy McNichols will be sidelined for months

The Washington Commanders could face another hurdle to navigate through in the running back room.

Veteran Jeremy McNichols is expected to miss several months while reports broke on Monday that he is seeking additional opinions into Tuesday. McNichols suffered what was reported as a mid-foot injury in Sunday's win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

It marks the latest blow to the running back room with position coach Anthony Lynn Jr. also adjusting without Jacory Croskey-Merritt, who remains on injured reserve after suffering a groin injury in week five.

The news of Croskey-Merritt's absence also came as the team announced running back Jeremy McNichols was removed from the injury report, paving the way for the veteran to be one of two to make their season debut in week six against the San Francisco 49ers. McNichols also entered the regular season battling injuries after he suffered a quad injury during preseason, adding a question mark for what his role would ultimately be. After signing a one year contract last offseason, McNichols has recorded 34 yards on just ten carries through two games with his longest run coming in week six after recording a seven yard run.

How the Commanders adjust in the running back room remains to be seen with Rachaad White, who registered his lone rushing touchdown on Sunday night, currently ranked third on the team with 200 rushing yards on 47 attempts. Austin Ekeler has also loomed large as a mid-season signing for Washington where he owns 67 rushing yards on 16 carries through four games. Washington previously waived sixth round pick Kaytron Allen, while Craig Reynolds has not appeared in a game since the week four loss against the Indianapolis Colts. With a long term injury designation despite no official announcement from the team, the Commanders have an opportunity to make a move to address the unit's depth into the second half of the season.

It also marks an inopportune time for the Commanders to struggle through limited skill player depth with defensive end Myles Garrett expected to return to practice this week as he, Aaron Darnold and the Los Angeles Rams head to Northwest Stadium in week nine. Quarterback Jayden Daniels has accounted for ten total touchdowns and no interceptions through five games, but how he adjusts to a potentially limited running back room will be a question for coordinator David Blough to alleviate as Washington looks to remain perfect at Northwest Stadium.
