NFL offenses currently get three points for a made field goal, but as talk of increasing that to four points, Aubrey isn't sure that's the best course of action.
Dallas Cowboys All-Pro kicker Brandon Aubrey has become one of the best in football in his short career, becoming a legitimate weapon for the franchise.
A long-range monster, Aubrey has made his name making field goals with ease from 50+ yards out, and even 60+ yards as well.
At the time of writing, Aubrey has the most converted 60+ yard field goals in the NFL with six.
Why is this being brought up? Because there might be a rule change coming, although there is no steam behind it to reward a field goal from 60+ yards with four points instead of three.
We know the NFL likes to tinker with its rules, but is making a long-range field goal worth more really the way to go?
In talking with ESPN's Michael DiRocco on that matter, Aubrey isn't so sure it would be the right move from a play-caller's perspective.
"I think it's a little weird," Aubrey said. "Kind of incentivizes you to stall the drive in a certain spot. It makes you really, really question your playcalling around that 50-yard line area. It's interesting for kickers that have the leg to get it there, maybe [there's] a little bit more value there. But kind of perverses the incentives of football where the goal is to get it as close to the other person's half as possible.
"So, I'm conflicted on it. I like it for the kickers. I think it's a nightmare for the playcallers."
Is Aubrey right?
Would it incentivize an offense to stall out near the middle of the field, knowing that if they had a kicker capable of making a 60-yard field goal, it would be four points in the bag?
It is certainly a conversation starter, and we know that not every kicker in football has the leg capable of making such a kick, although it is becoming more common with each passing year.
With Aubrey being such a weapon for Dallas to the extent that once it gets slightly over the 50-yard line, then Brandon is in range, but surely even if there are four points on offer, offenses will be going for the end zone more often, right?
Either way, Aubrey isn't sold on making a field goal from 60+ worth more, but is that going to be the way the NFL will trend over the coming years?
