The Cowboys' defense was woeful last season, but the unit is different under Parker, and they want to prove they are nothing like last year's team.
The Dallas Cowboys' defense under Christian Parker will unveil itself at MetLife Stadium on Sunday night against the New York Giants.
But the stench of last year's defense under Matt Eberflus is still around, with many unsure of what this group under Parker will be.
Granted, the vibes are completely different, so too is the belief in what Parker has built over the offseason, but then again, after Mike Zimmer's first game against the Cleveland Browns back in 2024, we thought that defense was going to be good, and look what happened.
So there is an element of the unknown, with many reverting to last season's Cowboys as a measuring stick.
And for Dak Prescott, he knows that this unit is different, and it isn't fair to compare last year's team to the one that will be rolling out on Sunday night.
"This is a new team, it's a new identity, I guess once Sunday comes, they can put last year and all the comparisons behind," Prescott said. "But you just look at the personality of that defense from a different play caller, the personnel is different, and just the way they attack and what they've been doing throughout training camp and practice making it hard on us.
"I don't think it's necessarily fair to compare them to last year's defense or for them to be battling that stigma. They have their own identity, and I'm excited for them to show it this Sunday."
And we are fascinated to see what Parker's defensive identity is.
We know they want to be physical, that's a given, and with Parker's defensive scheme centered around messing with a quarterback's eyes pre-snap, then changing into something completely different post-snap, it is going to be an interesting watch against the Giants.
In truth, the unit can't be as bad as it was last year, it just can't.
Now, what it can be is up for debate. Some think it will be a top-10 defense; others think top-15, which is middle of the pack and roughly a touchdown less per game compared to last year.
And against the Giants, this Cowboys defense will get a chance to put last year's woeful season well and truly behind them.
