There's no other way to put it: the Dallas Cowboys' defense wasn't good under Matt Eberflus.
And as a result, the former Chicago Bears head coach lost his jo.
Now, as the Cowboys turn for the offseason and what fans hope will be significant changes to the defense, the personnel the new coordinator will have is going to be interesting.
Who will stay and who will get pushed out?
The 2025 season tape will be the be-all and end-all for some players with Eberflus' defense ripped apart week after week.
Meanwhile, defensive tackle Quinnen Williams has delivered a rather pointed message regarding what transpired this season.
“A lot of people put the blame on the coaching all the time, and definitely as players we got to take accountability because we are on the field,” Williams said. “I always say, 'Cover 3' is 'Cover 3,' Man's been Man, Cover 2 has been Cover 2 for 50 years.
It's on players to execute when we're on the field, and I think that's the biggest thing."
With constant miscommunication a big theme all season, the Cowboys' defense gave up 30 points or more nine times in 2025. That's unacceptable.
So too were the constant explosive plays given up both on the ground and through the air.
But Williams again reiterated that the players, not Eberflus, have to take some of the responsibility for what went down this season.
"One man can’t change the game, and even Flus himself can't take all the blame for us struggling this year," Williams added. "Us as players have to take accountability also and help change this thing because it's all take one."
The Eberflus era ended after one season, and in truth, it had to. There was no logical reason for Dallas to bring him back. And it didn't.
Attention now turns to the next Cowboys defensive coordinator, and Quinnen might be the driving force in making sure what transpired under Eberflus doesn't happen again.
