The Cowboys have been active this offseason, but now that a Pro Bowl corner has been made available, should Dallas pick up the phone?
FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys' defense has undergone a significant transformation over the past couple of months, as new coordinator Christian Parker's vision is starting to come to life.
With a big emphasis on upgrading the secondary, the Cowboys have added Jalen Thompson (and P.J. Locke) in free agency help a room led by Malik Hooker (with carryover Markquese Bell) ... with first-round pick Caleb Downs set up as the cherry on top.
Add the group at cornerback, which now has veteran Cobie Durant and rookie Devin Moore joining likely starters DaRon Bland and Shavon Revel Jr., and it does feel like the Cowboys are solid shape here with both of those positions.
But now a player has become available who can supposedly play both safety and corner. And the rumors and speculation, mostly via the fan-boy blog sites, are flying.
Indianapolis Colts 2021 Pro Bowler Kenny Moore II has been granted his release from the AFC South franchise and now hits the open market.
And of course, many on social media - we'd almost say "everybody on social media'' - think the Cowboys should go after the veteran and add some leadership to Parker's defense.
But let's ask some questions.
Why couldn't the Colts find a trade partner?
Why did they cut him while eating $6 million (meaning they'd rather lose the room than keep the player)?
Would Dallas really take a flier on a 31-year-old player who now seems limited to playing in the slot only - which is where Downs will line up?
An NFL source tells CowboysRoundtable.com that the answer - at least for now - is "no.''
Moore, who will turn 31 in August, has made a career for himself after he went undrafted in 2017 following his work at D-II Valdosta State.
In his nine years with Indianapolis, Moore played in 132 regular-season games with 111 starts while posting 649 total tackles (498 solo), 11.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, 68 pass breakups, 21 interceptions and five total defensive touchdowns.
Simply, the Cowboys no longer feel desperate about needing a body in the secondary. ... especially if his market value is really $5.6 million APY, as Sportrac suggests.
How faded is Moore in reality compared to social-media reputation? He'd been a full-time starter for most of the entirety of his career until 2025. But last year - for a bottom-10 NFL defense - he started only seven games.
A cheap, one-year rental if/when the Cowboys learn that there is an unexpected weakness in this secondary? Maybe ... but we're told Dallas thinks that Moore is no longer a boundary corner, that he's a slot guy only.
And that's where Caleb Downs will often line up - so a "weakness'' there is unlikely.
How about the fan/media notion that Moore could “mentor’’ Downs? Why does Dallas need more of that with Hooker and Thompson in the safety room? Oh, and what is it about the Downs profile - heck, we’re betting that soon enough he’ll be a team captain - that suggests he needs to be led?
Dallas can re-evaluate its new secondary once we get to Oxnard, at which time ideas like this can be further explored. But for now? The Cowboys recently hosted veteran cornerback Adoree Jackson for a visit, and despite his Eagles-related connection with Parker, have yet to sign him.
And it would seem Jackson is a far better fit than Moore.
Oh, and one more sidebar issue that doesn't exactly grease the tracks on Kenny Moore's path to Dallas: His agent is David Mulugheta, for what it's worth.
