The new era of Dallas' defense features a promising playmaker relaying the information from Christian Parker.

The 2026 success of the Dallas Cowboys will largely depend on the performance of first-time coordinator Christian Parker remaking what was one of the worst defenses in football a year ago.

It's a group that now features several newcomers in addition to the coaching staff.

The Cowboys will likely deploy rookie first-rounders Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence. The defensive line rotation includes veteran pass-rusher additions Rashan Gary and Von Miller.

Even returners are inheriting larger responsibilities, such as edge rusher Donovan Ezeiruaku and cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. potentially seeing more starts than ever before.

Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown fills out a front seven next to newcomer Dee Winters, and while the former Texas Longhorn isn't a new commodity for Cowboys Nation, he'll be fitting into the theme of change by playing a new role.

Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer revealed that Overshown will start Week 1 at the New York Giants on Sunday night as the green-dot player on defense, meaning he will get play calls relayed into his helmet from Parker to share with his teammates.

The role is typically given to a player with a firm grasp of the scheme. Oftentimes, it's a linebacker who gets the green sticker because of their mid-level positioning and quick processing abilities, traits not unseen in Overshown, to go with his ranging playmaking style.

Still, Schottenheimer says, Sunday's opener is more of an audition than a permanent placement. He used the word "process" to explain his and Parker's approach to the leader of the bunch.

"Overshown's gonna be doing it quite a bit, but with our different packages going into this game, we do have different guys that can do it," said the second-year head coach this week on 105.3 The Fan.

"But D-Mo will be doing a lot of the heavy lifting."

This opportunity is presented in line with Overshown needing to make a big impact.

Overshown is entering the final year of his contract in 2026 after being drafted by Dallas in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

His breakneck play style and swagger have made him a fan favorite, but his production has consistently weighed on his availability after dealing with two major knee injuries.

After missing his entire rookie season with a preseason ACL tear, Overshown totaled the majority of his highlights in 2024, such as his 90 tackles, 5.0 sacks and interception returned for a touchdown on Thanksgiving Day.

Last year, he was limited to just six games played as he returned from a knee injury that cut the prior season short.

Overshown has remained active and productive throughout this offseason, which has built trust with Schottenheimer and Parker as a new season begins.

It is one that has major implications for Overshown and the team as a whole through the defense. Both of those factors will work directly with one another as Overshown assumes the role of the defensive orchestrator.
