The Miami Dolphins now presumably have their QB2, as the team pulled off a trade for Kyle McCord.
The Miami Dolphins have steadily been making moves to cut down their roster, which included cutting Cam Miller, trading Quinn Ewers, and waiving Mark Gronowski, leaving the team with a clear need.
Now, the team has seemingly found their backup quarterback in Kyle McCord. Per multiple reports, the Dolphins are sending the Green Bay Packers a 2028 sixth-round pick for McCord.
The Dolphins had just received a 2028 sixth-round pick after trading Ewers to the Jacksonville Jaguars, so this is essentially a swap of quarterbacks for general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan.
McCord has done well through preseason action, securing 446 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 102.4 passer rating.
Considering the moves at quarterback, it was guaranteed that the Dolphins were set to either trade for a passer or wait for cuts to happen from other teams. Instead of potentially having to battle it out with another team for McCord if he was cut, Miami chose instead to land him via a trade.
McCord began his career by being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He would remain on the practice squad for the Eagles for the entire season.
Following his one year stint with the Eagles, McCord then joined the Packers in early 2026 on a futures/reserve contract.
McCord impressed heavily during preseason but was not in line to pass up Tyrod Taylor as the Packers' backup quarterback behind Jordan Love. Now, he gets that chance to sit behind Malik Willis.
Considering Sullivan and Hafley both came from the Packers organization, this trade makes sense on that front.
None of the other quarterback options for the Dolphins panned out, including second-year passer Ewers. The former Texas signal caller was drafted in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft and sat behind Tua Tagovailoa for most of the season.
Ewers was called into action when the Miami organization decided to bench Tagovailoa. The then-rookie finished his four games with 622 passing yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Ewers did not separate himself in camp, and a groin injury forced him out of preseason action. Additionally, Miller was also in the same boat, not taking advantage of the opportunity given to him.
Following Ewers' injury, Mark Gronowski was signed back to the team and had a decent showing in the final preseason game. Gronowski secured 97 yards on 4-for-8 attempts and is reportedly aiming to be signed to the practice squad.
