Miami Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis sent a message of support to receiver Chris Bell after his past two games' struggles.
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chris Bell has been on a production skid over the last two games, not securing any of the five passes that were thrown his way.
While Bell is still trying to figure out his timing with quarterback Malik Willis, Willis sent a strong message to the rookie receiver.
Bell was a unique case in terms of his injury, as he rapidly recovered from a torn ACL that he suffered at the end of the 2025 season in college. Fast forward to the offseason program.
Bell recovered in a significant way, and he was ready to play in the third and final preseason game. That turned into a Week 1 debut as well, but he showed that the rust of not playing due to his injury was evident.
The Dolphins receiver still managed to bring in one catch for 25 yards. Bell did not have the chance to build chemistry with Willis due to needing time to recover, but the pair began to trust one another a bit more as the weeks went on.
Bell's most succesful performance was in Week 3, when he brought in four catches for 67 yards. However, the next two weeks saw the rookie and Willis remain off.
Willis has now reminded Bell not to lose his confidence.
"I think he's just continuing to grow, bro. I mean, he's a rookie. He's just trying to figure it out. Obviously, I have issues, and maybe I've missed him a couple of times. Who knows? I got to go back and watch again. But at the same time, I just tell him, don't lose any confidence. Just like if I go out there and turn the ball over, it's like, don't lose any confidence, just continue to play," Willis said.
Willis, being the leader that he is, took some ownership of the disconnect that he has had with Bell, saying he has definitely missed the rookie a couple of times.
The passing game definitely needs a boost, and Willis needs to build better chemistry with all of his pass catchers.
Week 7 may be the return of fellow rookie receiver Caleb Douglas, who had been Willis' top target before he suffered an ankle injury in Week 2.
Douglas's return might also work twofold. It gives the Dolphins a strong receiver back, and his return might also lead to far more opportunities for Bell and everyone else.
Having a muted passing attack has given Miami plenty of issues over five weeks, and that is an aspect of the entire team that needs to be figured out. If they cannot, it will be incredibly difficult to notch a win.
Bell and Douglas will now lead a receiving room that could turn things around on Sunday, as the Dolphins are playing the New York Jets. It's an important divisional game that could also lead to a win for Miami.
Once win happens, there could be many more with a renewed sense of confidence for this young team.
