A look at where the Miami Dolphins' offense and defense rank as the team heads into the bye.
The Miami Dolphins are currently 0-5, and the team is heading into an important bye week. While players can get rested and healed up to return, it will also be a time for some major self-reflection.
Head coach Jeff Hafley said he would evaluate everything from top to bottom. Whether or not that results in changes remains to be seen.
Miami is operating as it has been since Hafley took over. Rookies are getting plenty of playing time, but that has not translated to wins. That said, here is a look at where the team sits in offensive and defensive rankings.
Offense
Looking at general stats from ESPN, here is where the team sits in the basic categories.
In terms of overall yards per game, the Dolphins rank 28th out of 32 teams with 280.2 yards per game.
They rank 32nd out of passing yards per game with 153.6 per game.
Despite a poor passing offense, the Dolphins have a respectable run game. They currently rank 11th with 126.6. Even with De'Von Achane going down, Ollie Gordon II has stepped up in a big way and given the team a boost.
In terms of points per game, the Dolphins rank 31st with 14 points per game.
Overall, the Dolphins offense has struggled mightily through five weeks. They have been able to move the chains, but quarterback Malik Willis has not been able to truly build a great chemistry with his receivers.
Caleb Douglas also remains out with an ankle injury, and that was Willis' top target before he went down. The rookie could be back after the bye, and that may provide the offense with a big boost.
Defense
Miami is ranked 17th in total yards given up by the defense, with 329.8 yards given up on average per game.
The Dolphins sit at 15th in passing yards given up per game, with 219.2.
For rushing yards per game, they rank 16th with 110.6 rushing yards given up per game.
Miami also ranks 24th in points given up per game with 26.4.
The team also has four takeaways on defense, and ranks 32nd with four sacks.
The Dolphins defense is a bit more of a shining spot, but not by much. The run defense has been a bit stingy, but the pass rush continues to be nearly non-existent.
Miami needs to find a way to get after the quarterback, and stop the over-the-middle throws, or every team will run over them.
