Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni gave his thoughts on new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion's debut.
Coming into the season, the Philadelphia Eagles had all sorts of doubters around quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Following an inconsistent 2025 season, there was a lot of pressure on Hurts to put together a good year in 2026. And in the opening game of the season, the Eagles quarterback did just that.
Working with new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, Hurts was able to throw for 203 yards and three touchdowns. This helped lead the Eagles to a massive win in Week 1 over the Washington Commanders.
But Hurts wasn't the only one getting questions asked about him, with people wondering how Mannion would look. After the game, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni opened up about Mannion's debut against Washington.
The veteran head coach was happy with the job that took place on Sunday.
“I thought he did a good job of getting the play in. The operation’s the first thing you always look at,” Sirianni said. “I thought we were pretty balanced in our situations of the way we kind of break it down. I thought we were able to be explosive.”
The Eagles were able to push the ball down the field, which was something that they struggled heavily with last season. While the schemes that Mannion had didn't lead to a 30-point effort, there was a sign of life from this offense.
Many questions were asked over the offseason about the Eagles' attack following the trade of star wideout A.J. Brown. But the team was able to silence some of the doubters, at least for one week.
The Eagles will have to keep building on this performance, and there are plenty of areas to clean up. But getting Hurts to look more like his regular self has to be a win for Philadelphia.
Sirianni highlighted the play in the red zone, giving some credit to the offense.
“We would’ve liked to finish the third one in the red zone because those are always big, but we were 2-for-3 in the red zone,” Sirianni said. “Even in some tough situations, we got behind the sticks in the red zone on both of our first two scores, and I thought he did a good job calling it on that one to try to get us back.”
If the Eagles can build off this performance, while not regressing, they will have a strong chance to get back to being a Super Bowl contender. Hurts has proven himself over the years, even with the down 2025 season, and the Eagles feel comfortable with him under center.
Philadelphia wants to win another title, and so far, the performance in Week 1 was encouraging.
