A former Super Bowl champion shut down all questions around Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts with a simple message.
The Philadelphia Eagles are one of the more interesting teams in the NFL coming into the new season.
Part of this is because to them falling short in the playoffs a year ago, leading to all sorts of questions around the team. Most of them have been centered around star quarterback Jalen Hurts, whose inconsistency last season was a problem.
Last year, Hurts threw for 3224 with 25 touchdowns and six interceptions. But he did struggle to meet expectations at different times during the year.
And now that wide receiver A.J. Brown is gone, many have wondered how Hurts will fare this season. But the Eagles still have plenty of other offensive weapons, giving Hurts a chance for a full bounce-back year.
Ahead of the season start, former NFL star cornerback Jason McCourty came to the defense of Hurts. McCourty only used Hurts' resume to make his case for him.
"No question. The last thing I'll say: men lie, women lie, numbers don't. Super Bowl champion, Super Bowl MVP, you mentioned the runner-up to Mahomes in 2022… This dude has been productive throughout his entire career, no matter who the offensive coordinator has been, how it's constantly just changed year after year. He continues to rise above," McCourty said.
Much of the talk around Hurts has been due to the Eagles struggling from inconsistency a year ago. But just the season prior, Hurts was being praised for how he played, leading the Eagles to a title.
Heading into this season, there is certainly pressure on Hurts to succeed, especially with new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion now in the mix. But Hurts is an extremely talented player, who has won since he entered into the NFL.
The criticisms of Hurts are fair to some extent, but the Eagles are always in a position to win games. And this is all teams can ask from their quarterbacks throughout a long season.
Hurts raises the ceiling of the Eagles each time out, and Philadelphia should be a contender again this year because of him. But all eyes will be on how he plays, with each throw he makes being placed under the microscope.
This is the reality for any player in the league now, but especially Hurts, who plays for a team like the Eagles. Hurts can silence all doubters this season with his play, and he seems ready for the challenges ahead of him.
