After a painful 23-19 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the 2025 NFC Wild Card round, the frustration surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles continues to grow heading into the offseason.
When discussing the most recent loss, former Eagles’ star running back LeSean McCoy sounded off about quarterback Jalen Hurt’s performance in the contest, asking the veteran quarterback to “be special.”
“Jalen Hurts, I need you to be special,” McCoy stated on the Speakeasy Talk Show. “Make plays. I did a lot of digging…I know some people, and the problem is, we can’t do different exotic looks, different formations, different motions because I’m hearing that he can’t really do it.”
After being named the Super Bowl LIX MVP, Hurts had a better statistical season in 2025, throwing for 3,224 yards and 25 touchdowns. However, the former 2020 second-round pick was less efficient this year, as he completed just 64.8 percent of his attempts while also finishing with a 55.7 QBR.
One of the main reasons why Hurts was not as successful this season was due to the run game taking a significant step back from the previous year.
In 2024, the Eagles averaged 179.8 rushing yards per game behind the likes of star running back Saquon Barkley. Unfortunately, the prolific rusher was unable to continue his incredible stint in 2025, and Philadelphia’s offense averaged 116.9 rushing yards throughout the regular season.
Looking at his stat line against the 49ers, Hurts had a subpar performance, completing 20 of his 35 attempts for 168 yards and one touchdown. While this may not sound alarming, the offense failed to generate any sort of production in the second half, ending with a total of 114 yards in the final two quarters.
McCoy would also go on to say that Hurts is a better quarterback than Brock Purdy, but the most recent playoff matchup may change his mind.
“It’s an easy [answer] for me: Jalen Hurts. But when I think about it, I don’t know now,” McCoy claimed. “Yeah, he might have thrown some [interceptions] in the Wild Card game against the Eagles on the road, but when he needed to make plays, he made them. And I think if Brock Purdy had [the Eagles’] weapons, I think we win [the Wild Card game] at least by 10 points.”
Now, general manager Howie Roseman must figure out a way to revamp the offensive efforts for the 2026 season.
