How well Trevor Lawrence has been playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars should make the rest of the NFL very nervous.

When Lawrence entered the league in 2021 after a stellar collegiate career at Clemson, he was thought of as the best quarterback prospect since Andrew Luck. Jacksonville took him with the first overall pick, and the expectations were almost universal that he would become a star.

Over his first four seasons, Lawrence had spurts of terrific play, but never could keep it going for long stretches. He wasn't done many favors by the organization, which seemed to replace its head coach almost every year.

However, the Jaguars saw enough out of Lawrence to sign their franchise QB to an enormous five-year, $275 million contract extension in June 2024. The contract was a huge bet by the team that he would become the quarterback everyone expected.

Lawrence responded with a miserable 2024 campaign. He was limited to only 10 games due to a shoulder injury and the concussion he suffered after Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair's cheap shot.

The contract looked like a mistake, and people wondered if Lawrence was ever going to live up to either his salary or his enormous talent.

In 2025, Lawrence and the Jaguars finally got things right.

Jacksonville hired Liam Coen to be Lawrence's fourth head coach in five seasons. Coen has earned the reputation for being one of the NFL's best offensive minds and playcallers. The team was hoping Coen could do for Lawrence what he did for Baker Mayfield as offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024. Mayfield had the best year of his career, throwing for 4,500 yards and 41 scores, while completing an absurd 71.4% of his passes.

Lawrence once again had to learn a new offense, which he described as being "stressful mentally." Once he did, he played lights-out and finished fifth in MVP voting.

He was dynamic down the stretch last year, leading his team to eight straight wins en route to a 13-4 season.

With expectations raised for 2026, Lawrence started the new campaign by going a surgical 18 for 23, 245 yards, and four TDs in a 34-10 victory against the Cleveland Browns. It was just the latest game in an unbelievable heater for Lawrence, who could win MVP this season.

This is the best version of Lawrence anyone has seen his Clemson days.

Damien Harris of CBS Sports, who got a good look at how great Lawrence was in college when Clemson beat Harris' Alabama squad 44-16 in the National Championship Game, talked about how this Trevor Lawrence is starting to remind him of Clemson Trevor Lawrence.

"The way Trevor Lawrence played today (Sunday) ... it reminds me of when he was at Clemson...He's really making a push to be in that upper echelon of quarterbacks."

It may have taken longer than most people thought, but Lawrence is becoming who everybody thought he would be five years ago.

All he needed was a coach who could bring the best out of him. 

Lawrence and Coen are quickly becoming one of the elite QB/HC duos in the NFL. As they continue to grow together, they will only get better.

When Lawrence was at Clemson, he looked like a future Hall of Famer.

That version of Lawrence is back, and that is a scary thought for the rest of the league.
