Can the Jaguars take advantage of a short-handed Eagles squad in London? Check out my prediction for the Week 5 showdown.
The Jacksonville Jaguars potentially caught a lucky break in their Week 5 battle against the Philadelphia Eagles in London.
The Eagles are another difficult opponent, a common theme of the early portion of Jacksonville’s schedule. However, the Jaguars are fortunate to play the Eagles when they are an extremely depleted, wounded team.
Philly is without its three best offensive players for Sunday’s matchup against Jacksonville. Superstar running back Saquon Barkley and star wide receiver DeVonta Smith are both out with hamstring injuries, and Hall of Fame right tackle Lane Johnson suddenly announced his retirement on Tuesday, saying he needed to focus on his mental health.
Barkley’s backup, Tank Bigsby, is on injured reserve, leaving the Eagles very shorthanded in the backfield.
Philadelphia also traded two-time Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens on Wednesday. Jurgens had been moved to left guard after Landon Dickerson was placed on IR. The Eagles’ offensive line has been left in shambles and must now face one of the NFL’s best defenses.
The Eagles are also down WR Hollywood Brown and safety Marcus Epps, and may be without star pass rusher Jonathan Greenard, who was unable to practice all week.
The Jaguars, meanwhile, strut into Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on a roll after beating a pair of AFC contenders in consecutive weeks.
Jacksonville annihilated the New England Patriots at home 35-6 in Week 3 before going on the road and handling the Cincinnati Bengals 22-17 last week.
Very few teams are playing as well as the Jaguars right now, and they get to play an Eagles club at much less than full strength.
Jacksonville Has Clear Advantage
Though the Eagles are never a team that can be overlooked, even in their current state, Jacksonville has a clear advantage on Sunday.
Even before the injuries to Barkley and Smith, Philadelphia’s offense was struggling, clearly missing WR A.J. Brown, who was traded to the Patriots before the season.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts has regressed over the last couple of seasons, and the loss of his top receiver has only made things worse.
The Eagles' lack of healthy RBs may force Philadelphia to rely on Hurts to put the offense on his back if they are to have a chance.
Jacksonville’s defense must be chomping at the bit this week.
The Jaguars' offense has been as potent as advertised this season. Running back Bhayshul Tuten has excelled in his new role as the backfield’s top option.
Meanwhile, WR Parker Washington has continued his ascent into stardom, despite last week’s surprisingly quiet game against the Bengals.
However, Jacksonville’s offense has enough weapons to pick up the slack whenever one has an off game. Last week, tight end Brenton Strange stepped up with seven grabs for 95 yards.
QB Trevor Lawrence has continued playing at an MVP level and should continue to find success against the Eagles, especially if Greenard can’t play.
Who Wins?
The Jaguars are too good right now. Even if the Eagles were healthy and playing well, which they are not, it would have been difficult for them to beat Jacksonville.
Expect the Jaguars to impose their will early and play with a lead throughout, making it even more difficult for Philadelphia to pull off the upset.
Jaguars win this one in convincing fashion.
Prediction: Jaguars 34, Eagles 17
