Fresh off a refined connection with Trevor Lawrence, Brian Thomas Jr. leverages elite size and improved route running to silence doubters following a rocky sophomore campaign.
After a stellar rookie season, Brian Thomas Jr. experienced a bit of a sophomore slump last year despite the Jacksonville Jaguars' overall team success.
But, this offseason, Thomas has been heavily praised for his work ethic and growing connection with starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
In mid-June, during OTA's, ESPN's NFL Nation named Thomas the biggest surprise of the offseason for Jacksonville thus far, noting his increased comfortability and chemistry with Lawrence.
On Friday, head coach Liam Coen talked extensively about this continuity and how his lead receiver has looked in early practices during training camp.
"I've been pleased about how strong his [Thomas] hands have been at some of the points of contact and those contested catches. Obviously, the quarterback is going to continue to trust him in those positions," Coen said. "We all trust him to make those plays."
Thomas, who stands at 6-foot-2, nearly 210 pounds, is a problem in 1-on-1 coverage, as he is able to high point passes over his defender and make contested grabs.
Last season, drops and lingering injuries limited the former LSU standout's production, but his presence was still felt.
Coen talked about Thomas' growth as a route runner, saying that he has added elements to his game outside of being a vertical threat.
"I think we're just continuing to see from the spring to now — (he's) taking those steps that we all wanted to see..." Coen said. "Some of the routes BT ran yesterday — they were high, high level."
For a Jaguars team who now has Parker Washington, Jakobi Meyers, and Travis Hunter alongside the uber-talented Thomas, Lawrence has plenty of weapons at his disposal.
Throughout the preseason, Lawrence talked about the extra work he and Thomas had put in, while saying he can definitely see the growth.
"I’m super excited for this year for him," Lawrence said following the first day of training camp. "I think he’s going to have an awesome year. Our chemistry has grown a ton."
In 2024, Thomas had 87 catches for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns, ranking first among rookie receivers in yards and TDs, beating out his college teammate, Malik Nabers.
While these numbers took a dip last season, he shouldn't see as much double coverage thanks to the complimentary pieces in the wide receiver room, which spells trouble for opposing defenses.
Despite the slow start, Thomas closed out the season in promising fashion, scoring a touchdown against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Wild Card game, only his third of the season.
Going forward, Thomas should be amongst one of the best redzone threats at his position, combining his size with elite speed and jumping ability.
