New York Jets star wide receiver Garrett Wilson seems very confident that the team will make the playoffs this year.
There aren't many people believing in the New York Jets this coming NFL season, but don't tell wide receiver Garrett Wilson that.
Wilson discussed the upcoming season for New York, saying that the postsason was realistic for the team.
"Very realistic. I mean, I think it should happen, I'll say that. It's our job to go play ball and do it, but that's how I feel about it," Wilson said.
New York hasn't made the playoffs since the 2010 season, the longest active drought in North America. But the vibes in the locker room seem to believe that this could be the eyar that something happens for the franchise.
"Something is going to happen this year," Wilson said. "I'm a faithful guy and I believe that. With the work we've been putting in, we have as good an opportunity as anybody in the league. I'm excited, man. We have a hell of a group here."
ESPN has given New York a 6.5 percent chance to make the playoffs, coming off a 3-14 season. The Jets didn't do too much to improve the roster, so the confidence from Wilson seems to be a gut feeling.
New York did bring in veteran quarterback Geno Smith to lead the show, giving them some semblance of more competitiveness. But whether Smith can be the signal-caller to lead this team back to the postseason remains to be seen.
Smith can make the offense hum much more smoothly, especially with weapons such as Wilson and running back Breece Hall. The veteran will have a lot of responsibility on his shoulders this season; however, he isn't backing down from the challenges ahead of him.
"It starts with wins and it ends with wins," Smith said. "That's all that matters in this league. It's the win and loss column."
It remains to be seen if the Jets will be able to get back into contention for the playoffs. And this could be an interesting year for New York, with head coach Aaron Glenn entering his second season with the franchise.
But in the end, the only thing that matters is getting to the playoffs. And for the Jets, it seems to be the only goal as the new year gets ready to kick off.
"The playoffs, man, no doubt about it," Wilson said. "[Make the] playoffs, then re-start the season and we'll see what happens. Nothing else."
New York kicks off its new season against the Tennessee Titans this weekend.
