Fresh reinforcements and steady quarterback play are poised to unlock Garrett Wilson’s elite potential, transforming New York’s star playmaker into a dangerous multi-level threat under Frank Reich.

After an abysmal 2025 campaign, the New York Jets will look to flip the script under head coach Aaron Glenn during the 2026 NFL season.

This offseason, general manager Darren Mougey did an excellent job of acquiring veteran and rookie playmakers for the struggling roster. On offense, New York used two first-round picks on new weapons for quarterback Geno Smith in Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq and Indiana wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr.

However, Mougey's newest additions to the Jets' pass catchers should not limit the role of star wideout Garrett Wilson in 2026, but rather help him achieve new heights with the offense for the foreseeable future.

Why Wilson Will Be a Centerpiece for the Jets Offense

Wilson, a former first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has had plenty of ups and downs throughout his time in New York. In his four seasons with the Jets, the polished playmaker has recorded 3,466 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns on 315 receptions. Wilson also finished with three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons during his first three NFL seasons, but a midseason injury caused him to play seven games in 2025.

One of the most pressing issues the Jets faced this offseason was finding additional pass catchers to play alongside their star wideout, since Wilson commanded most of the attention in the passing game. Now, with Sadiq and Cooper joining the roster for the 2026 season, the rookies will provide newly hired offensive coordinator Frank Reich with more threats on offense, which will simultaneously create more opportunities for Wilson. Cooper does an outstanding job of gaining yards after the catch, so his usage in the short and intermediate game allows Wilson to attack all three levels of the field.

In addition to receiving multiple running mates on offense this offseason, Wilson now has stability at the quarterback position with Smith entering the picture for the 2026 season. While the veteran quarterback struggled throughout his time with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2025, Smith is viewed as a clear upgrade over former Jets' quarterbacks Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor. To make matters more interesting, New York could also be in contention for one of the top quarterbacks in the 2027 NFL Draft, giving Wilson more insurance at the position.

While Wilson has yet to take the next step in his career to become a top wide receiver in the NFL, all signs are pointing towards a breakout season in 2026. And thanks to Mougey's decision to extend the star wideout last offseason, it's clear that the organization envisions him to be in New York for the long haul.
