New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh certainly had an easy pitch for his new offensive coordinator when it comes to working with a young core of talented players around second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart, which includes Malik Nabers and Cam Skattebo. But it’s an important hire for Harbaugh as he looks to turn the Giants into contenders. He made his decision, as it was announced that New York is hiring Matt Nagy to be their offensive coordinator. Nagy will come over to lead the Giants’ offense after spending four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs working with the best in quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Nagy first started as the Chiefs quarterbacks coach in 2022, and was promoted to coordinator in 2023, though coach Andy Reid was the playcaller. Now, it wasn’t the most explosive offense in Kansas City last season, as they were the No. 20 ranked offense. But Nagy brings head coach experience that will be valuable as a leader of a younger unit. Nagy was the head coach of the Chicago Bears from 2018 to 2021 and was in the final running for the Tennessee Titans job that ultimately went to Robert Saleh.
Here is the full story from Giants Roundtable writer Matthew Schmidt on how Nagy's considerable experience will help in the development of Dart.
While his name isn’t the sexiest when it comes to the numbers his offenses in Kansas City put up, it also falls on Reid, who was the primary playcaller in those three seasons. Nagy will have that playcalling role in New York, where he’ll be able to at least see his offense out in full as the creator and playcaller. Equally important, he will focus on shaping Dart into a franchise quarterback.
