The Philadelphia Eagles made a trade for a veteran quarterback from another NFC squad.

When the Carolina Panthers signed Kenny Pickett to be the backup for starter Bryce Young last week, the writing was on the wall for Andy Dalton. That may have led to teams inquiring about his availability to serve as their veteran backups. On Wednesday, they agreed to terms with the Philadelphia Eagles, trading the veteran signal caller in exchange for the Eagles’ 2027 seventh round pick. Now, Dalton will compete with backup Tanner McKee on the depth chart behind Eagles’ starter Jalen Hurts. Now, the 38-year-old Dalton is certainly not the player he was when he first got into the league, but he was a top passer when he was younger.

Dalton has been on the Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, and Panthers, and has a career 39,793 passing yards and 254 passing touchdowns with a career 151 interceptions. He made one start last season in place of an injured Young and had four total appearances in 2025. He completed 67.6 percent of his passes for 293 yards and one touchdown to one interception. Dalton is in the final year of his contract, where he stands to make $4 million. He’s served as Young’s backup for the last three seasons with Carolina and made five starts in Young’s place when he was benched in 2024.

For Philly, it’s not a roster-altering move, but with the Panthers rolling with a younger backup in the 27-year-old Pickett, the Eagles are bringing in some veteran leadership. Hopefully, that will help both Mckee’s developmental trajectory and Hurts reach a new level next season.
