The New York Giants fell at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs on their home opener during Sunday Night Football by the score of 22-9.
Russell Wilson looked like a scared rookie out there, completing 56% of his passes, zero touchdowns, two interceptions, panicking in the pocket, and seemingly being indecisive in his reads.
On top of that, the Chiefs didn’t look much better. Patrick Mahomes was uncharacteristically inaccurate, and had to have Tyquan Thornton save his bacon a few times.
Alas, this was a nightmare of a game for the Giants, and will require owner John Marra and general manager Joe Schoen to reconsider how this team is built.
Here are three observations from Sunday Night Football.
We need to talk about how ugly this game was.
Purely ugly on every end of the football. Nothing worked, throws were inaccurate from both teams, easy catches ended up resulting in drops, too many penalties, we can go on.
After last week’s exciting battle with the Dallas Cowboys seemed to signify that the Giants had some strong momentum building. They were explosive and exciting, and it seemed like Wilson got his swagger back.
How seven days can change things. Because that was an abhorrent performance from everyone not named Cam Skattebo and an impressive sequence from Theo Johnson.
Wilson was incredibly impatient all game. For a seasoned veteran who has won a Super Bowl, he went out of his way to throw any and every deep ball he could which resulted in two very avoidable interceptions.
Finally!
New York started out the game by running the ball as much as possible, and getting its running backs in Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy in the receiving game.
Shockingly, Tracy had a lot of looks, did well, and it seemed like he was going to get a significant volume – which was the total opposite of what we were led to believe prior to kickoff. However, he got taken down in the first quarter, and landed awkwardly on his shoulder
Luckily, Skattebo came in the clutch, and he looks exactly like the player we saw with the Arizona State Sun Devils last season.
He ended up rushing for 60 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown, and led the Giants in receiving with 61 yards.
He’s a viable threat by catching passes if all else fails, but he truly shines when he navigates through pockets of space.
You look at him, and you think he’s solely a bruiser, which to be fair, he absolutely is. But Skattebo is fantastic in his change of direction. When he gets a full head of steam, he has exceptional downhill speed, but when he’s sifting through traffic, he has a deceptive elusiveness to his game.
With Tracy’s health in the air, expect Skattebo to be the main guy in the backfield.
Boy, were those boos loud.
From the “we want Dart” chants, to a horrendous final drive.
We talked about this after the Dallas loss – Wilson has completely lost his sense of self and he attempts to be the hero.
Wilson was so anxious to throw the deep ball. You can see him loading up at times.
Watching him these days is like watching your 12-year-old nephew playing Madden. All he wants to do is launch the ball into space, so he can make an explosive play.
He did it twice, and it resulted in two interceptions, and then he did it again where he tried to target Malik Nabers in the end zone, and Bryan Cook nearly picked him off.
Then it was New York’s second to last drive. Wilson connected with Wan’Dale Robinson for a 26 yard pass in the red zone, and then the next play, he threw the ball into the players tunnel with no one nearby for intentional grounding. Then the next three plays, he ran a QB draw once, and the rest, he panicked in the pocket as it closed up on him, and threw it into the abyss where no one could grab it.
That’s when the boos got the loudest.
Fans want Jaxson Dart, and rightfully so. Wilson has looked horrible and his quick trigger is going to significantly hinder his opportunity to win games.
However, let’s pump the brakes. The last thing this franchise needs is for another young quarterback to be feeling the scorn of Brian Daboll.
Need any convincing? Daniel Jones is 3-0 with the Indianapolis Colts, and has yet to throw an interception on 71.6% completion and 88 attempts.
Take that however you will. It’s either Daboll goes, or Dart stays on the bench. After Sunday night, the former may be very possible.
