The New York Giants have received an NFL trade deadline update on a potential move for a defensive tackle.
The New York Giants could definitely stand to add some more beef up front, and they could very well get some help in that area before the NFL trade deadline.
Outside of DJ Reader, the Giants don't really have any truly reliable pieces at defensive tackle, and while sixth-round rookie Bobby Jamison-Travis showed some promise last week, they probably don't want to depend on him just yet.
There should be quite a few interior defenders available before Nov. 10, and we've already heard New York linked to Indianapolis Colts veteran Grover Stewart.
Then, on Friday, NFL insider Albert Breer provided an update on the Giants' trade search, revealing that Big Blue has been "sniffing around defensive tackles."
That could mean Stewart. It could also mean pieces like A'Shawn Robinson (who spent 2023 in New York), Roy Lopez or Daron Payne.
The problem for the Giants, as we've discussed ad nauseam, is the fact that they have already traded away their fourth, fifth and seventh-round picks this year.
New York does have an extra sixth-rounder it acquired from the Jacksonville Jaguars shortly before the start of the regular season, leaving the Giants with a pair of sixth-rounders. But other than that, the cupboard is bare.
The G-Men certainly aren't trading a first-rounder or a Day 2 pick for any of the defensive tackles expected to be available, and while they could always move future draft capital, that obviously comes with inherent risk.
That's especially considering that most of the DTs who could be moved within the next two weeks are impending free agents, which means New York is in danger of parting with a draft pick for a rental who will just walk after the season.
The Giants are 4-2-1 and sit atop the NFC East heading into their Week 8 bye, so they are certainly in pole position when it comes to participating in the playoffs.
But is New York actually good enough to make a Super Bowl run, especially considering all of the injuries that have befallen the team this season? Probably not.
That's why the Giants need to be extra careful when it comes to their decision making before the trade deadline.
At worst, New York can continue seeing what it has in Jamison-Travis, who enjoyed a very strong game against the Houston Texans last Sunday while seeing an uptick in snaps.
We'll see if the Giants make any significant moves, but I'm not seeing a Leonard Williams type of trade here for Big Blue.
