The Giants have decided on a quarterback for this week.
Heading into Week 7 against the Houston Texans, the New York Giants have been dealing with questions around their starting quarterback.
But the team has now made a decision for the upcoming game, with New York electing to start J.J. McCarthy over Jameis Winston. McCarthy will now be tasked with helping the Giants get back on track this week against a feisty Houston defense.
McCarthy came into the game last week for New York against the New Orleans Saints, giving the team some life. After the Giants went down big to New Orleans, McCarthy generated multiple strong drives to get the team back into the game.
While the team came up short in the comeback attempt, McCarthy had the offense firing on all cylinders, and it seems like the Giants want to see if he can do it again. Against the Saints, McCarthy threw for 243 yards with one touchdown and one interception, entering the game in the fourth quarter.
McCarthy, the former first-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings, will now have his opportunity to prove why he should remain the starter. With Jaxson Dart out for the season and Winston putting up inconsistent numbers, this could be the McCarthy show going forward.
The Giants are hopeful that McCarthy can be the guy for them the rest of the season, but it all starts with this game against Houston. McCarthy has shown success in the past in the NFL, and he looked like a different player against the Saints.
New York has plenty of weapons for McCarthy to throw the ball too, with star wide receiver Malik Nabers being the top option. Nabers has started to get his year going strong, with him putting up three straight games over 100 yards.
But the Giants also have tight end Isaiah Likely for McCarthy to use, and he has emerged as a true weapon for this team. If McCarthy can limit turnovers, playing clean football, he will give the Giants a chance to win games the rest of the year.
New York sits with a record of 3-2-1 on the year, and this team will try to get back in the win column this weekend against Houston. The Texans will come in at 2-4 on the year, having won two straight games.
If McCarthy can put together a strong showing, he won't see the bench the rest of the 2026 season. But only time will tell if this is the right move for the Giants to make at the quarterback spot.
