The New York Giants have seemingly found their number-one quarterback, and for that, they’re going “big game hunting.”
NFL Insider and SNY reporter Connor Hughes wrote that the Giants are actively searching for a high-end wide receiver to pair up with rookie quarterback sensation Jaxson Dart.
This is not a real surprise, but it's clear that they're looking at anyone and eveyone. Just recently, our own Matthew Schmidt covered that the Giants have been navigating the market for potential wide receiver help -- and that list has grown dramatically.
No one, besides those in the Giants facility, really knows what direction the G-Men are heading in.
New York found itself in the hole in the first four games of the season, handing veteran quarterback Russell Wilson the keys to start the season. However, Wilson’s showing donning the blue and white has been an utter disappointment, forcing coach Brian Daboll’s hand to start Dart.
The injuries in the wide receiver room have forced General Manager Joe Schoen’s hand, looking everywhere for help. With Malik Nabers being out for the rest of the season with a torn ACL, and Darius Slayton dealing with a lingering hamstring issue, only Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt are New York’s top receivers.
Robinson has been exceptional to start the season, especially when he’s been called upon. He’s crushing his career high in yards per catch and is well on his way to setting a new career high in receiving yards.
The problem is, Robinson doesn’t have the resume of being a WR1 in the NFL, no matter how solid he’s been.
Which is why Schoen has his eyes set on three receivers in particular.
Of the candidates is New Orleans Saints’ Chris Olave, Miami Dolphins’ Jaylen Waddle, and Las Vegas Raiders’ Jakobi Meyers.
The only receiver that seems like a feasible option here is Meyers. The seventh year veteran is fresh off his first ever 1,000-plus yard season and is in the final year of his three-year contract with the Raiders.
Prior to the season starting, Meyers had requested a trade, to that of which the Raiders rejected.
Currently, the Raiders are last in the AFC West with a 2-4 record as well, but the team’s outlook is a tad bit bleaker than the Giants’. Because of that, Meyers is a solid option to come to New York and will likely be the cheapest asset.
Waddle has four more years on his contract and is still 27 years old, so it’s hard to believe that the Dolphins are willing to part with one of their prime investments.
Olave is a bit of a different story, and much more of a risk. He may have the highest ceiling out of each of the receivers, but the amount of concussions that he has suffered is incredibly concerning.
His first two seasons showed that he had superstar potential, but over the past two seasons, he’s only played 14 games. In four seasons, he’s suffered at least five documented concussions, which could be an immediate red flag for the Giants.
Big Blue may be going big game hunting but if the Giants don’t want to risk their future assets, Meyers may be the best option.
