The New York Giants have announced that they’re making 2025 first-round draft pick Jaxson Dart their starting quarterback.

It was reported by NFL Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo on X Tuesday afternoon, and indicating that head coach Brian Daboll informed both parties yesterday that the door opened for change.

It’s been three weeks into the season, and it was clear that the Russell Wilson experiment in East Rutherford just wasn’t working out the way he and the team had hoped.

From a terrible start to the season in Washington, to a wild and impressive game against the Cowboys, to the ultimate disappointment on Sunday Night Football against the Kansas City Chiefs.

After Week 1, Daboll stood by Wilson announcing that he had confidence in the former Super Bowl champion.

The following week against Dallas, Wilson then posted his second-best game of his career where he threw for 450 yards and three touchdowns, before throwing an interception that ended up costing the Giants the game.

Apart from Week 2, Wilson has neglected to throw for another touchdown.

The last drive in Week 3’s game just may have been the final straw for Wilson. The pressure was starting to get to him, he seemed impatient and threw the ball away in the end zone three separate times.

That’s why it doesn’t need to be said, but the move to insert Dart as the starting quarterback shouldn’t be a surprise.

Giants fans were clamoring for Dart after Week 1, held their tongue after Week 2, and then Week 3 was their ultimate breaking point. You can hear rattling through MetLife Stadium, a collective “We Want Dart” chant as the offense struggled to get anything going.

Dart was selected 25th overall by the Giants in this past draft out of Ole Miss, after posting the best season out of all quarterbacks in the SEC.

He threw for a conference-leading 4,279 passing yards, 69.3% completion rate, an FBS leading 180.7 quarterback rating, and also led the FBS in yards gained per passing attempt.

Not only that, he has the athleticism to scramble if a play breaks down and generate positive yardage on the ground. In college football, they deduct yards gained for the quarterback if you’re sacked, and even with that, he still managed to rush for close to 500 yards.

Dart is a supremely talented quarterback who shouldn’t have a problem adjusting to the pros athletically. However, the one knock on his game was that he can be a little slow processing information in real time.

It’s something to keep in mind as he makes his first NFL start.

This is also likely Daboll’s last chance to save his job. Currently, the seat he’s sitting on is blazing hot, and if he opted to stick with Wilson for Week 4, that may have signaled the end of his time with the Giants.

New York’s Week 4 game, and Jaxson Dart’s first NFL start will take place on Sunday, September 28th, at MetLife Stadium, where the Giants take on the Los Angeles Chargers.

Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. ET and broadcasted on CBS.
