It's hard to spot the good during a rough stretch in the NFL, but the New York Giants have a lot to look forward to in the near future.
After making a few key additions this offseason, head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen have yet to see the repercussions of their moves this season. Through three weeks of the 2025 NFL season, the Giants have dropped multiple heart-breaking losses thus far, causing the franchise to begin the year 0-3. This included an overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys in week two, along with a competitive loss in week three to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Luckily for Daboll and Schoen, there is plenty to hang their hats on this season.
On defense, the lethal defensive linemen trio of Brian Burns, Dexter Lawrence and Abdul Carter is beginning to show signs of greatness. Burns currently leads the team in sacks with four this season, while Lawrence and Carter have combined for 16 tackles and one tackle for a loss.
This, along with linebacker Bobby Okereke accumulating a league-best 34 tackles in three games, is exactly what the team hoped for with their front seven when they selected Carter in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
In addition to men up front, New York's secondary unit has taken a huge step forward from last season. Nickel Dru Phillips has been nothing short of terrific this season, posting 20 tackles, four pass breakups and one interception in three games. Phillips, as well as newly-signed defensive backs Jevon Holland and Paulson Adebo have allowed the defense to feel solidified for the first time in the Daboll-era.
While the offense has gone through it's fair share of woes this year, there are still a few bright spots on the other side of the ball.
One of the major differences has been the run game and it's involvement of rookie rusher Cam Skattebo. The 2025 fourth-round pick has slowly emerged as the team's lead back this season, tallying 102 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries.
The addition of Skattebo now gives the Giants a dynamic, young one-two punch on the ground with 2024 fifth-round pick Tyrone Tracy Jr. Skattebo looks stellar as the offense's power back, allowing for Tracy to be a nice pace-of-play and third-down back.
But the most important piece for the Giants has yet to make a start in quarterback Jaxson Dart. The 2025 first-round pick showed plenty of promise in the preseason, causing an outcry from the fanbase to hand him the keys to the offense.
It still remains unclear if the Giants will bring back Daboll and Schoen for the 2026 season, but for whoever is calling the shot next year, this could become a well-oiled machine in the future. Looking ahead at the 2026 NFL Draft, New York must select an offensive lineman and a wide receiver to truly set this franchise up for success. And with the team likely to have a top-10 pick, it's possible that the Giants could change their fate around in 2026.
