The Green Bay Packers must avoid making this move this season.
The Green Bay Packers have started to round into form over the last few weeks of the NFL season, seeing the offense build more.
Last week against the Chicago Bears, the Packers offense looked very good, with quarterback Jordan Love pushing the ball down the field. Green Bay has solid wide receiver options for Love to use, but this team could also use a little more firepower.
Love can't do everything himself, and the Packers are another injury away from being in some serious trouble. Christian Watson and Matthew Golden give this team a legitimate duo, but Green Bay could use a little more help.
Given the injury to Jayden Reed, there has been some talk about the Packers potentially going after a wide receiver on the open market or via a trade.
This all remains to be seen, but with the trade deadline approaching, the Packers' front office could look to be active in the league. While Green Bay could use another player for the offense, they should steer clear of a player who has been linked to them in the past.
This would be veteran wideout Quentin Johnston of the Los Angeles Chargers, who has seen a very up-and-down start to his NFL career. Johnston came into the league with high expectations for Los Angeles, but he hasn't been able to put together much of anything for the team.
So far this year, Johnston has caught seven passes for 108 yards, showing a downturn in the progress he had made. Over the last two years, Johnston had put up over 700 yards and eight touchdowns each season.
The last thing that the Packers need is another big-bodied wide receiver who drops passes, even with the upside that Johnston could bring. There is a possibility that a change of scenery could see Johnston finally reach his ceiling in the NFL, but the Packers shouldn't be the team to take that chance.
The only way the Packers should look to make a deal for Johnston is if the Chargers sell low on him, which isn't likely to happen. If the Packers could only send a conditional sixth-round pick or lower, it could be worth making the trade, but otherwise, the team should look elsewhere.
Los Angeles has also picked up his fifth-year option, meaning that he will be paid $16.5 million for next season. Green Bay has better options that it can consider if the front office wants to add more to this offense.
