With the 2026 NFL Free Agency period set to open this week, the Green Bay Packers will look to add some additional playmakers to the roster before the 2026 NFL season. However, the organization has already made its first big-time move of the offseason on Monday morning.
According to NFL insider Dianna Russini, the Green Bay Packers are reportedly set to trade star defensive end Rashan Gary to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round pick.
Former Green Bay Packers' DL Rashan Gary (Jeff Hanisch-Imagn Images)Gary, a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft from Michigan, has been a key playmaker for the Packers throughout his seven seasons with the organization. After having a limited role on defense during his rookie season, Gary became a force for Green Bay in 2020, recording 34 tackles and five sacks in his second season with the franchise.
His impressive second year led to an increased role in the following season, as the talented pass rusher finished with a career-high 47 tackles and 9.5 sacks, while also forcing two fumbles throughout the 2021 season. Gary became a consistent threat off the end for the Packers over the last three years, racking up a total of 24 sacks.
Unfortunately for the 28-year-old, his role within Green Bay’s defense would take a massive hit after general manager Brian Gutekunst’s surprising trade for Micah Parsons before the 2025 season. Parson, despite playing in just 14 games with the Packers this past season, was easily the team’s top pass rusher, racking up 12.5 sacks.
After Gary signed a four-year, $96 million deal with the organization back in 2023, it was clear that Gutekunst would likely part ways with the longtime veteran this offseason.
Last week, Gary made a “farewell post” to Green Bay on his Instagram, which he later confirmed that he was hacked. However, instead of outright cutting him, the Packers managed to find a trade partner for Gary, and the star pass rusher will continue his NFL career in Dallas.
