After an incredible first season with the Green Bay Packers in 2024, running back Josh Jacobs has yet to reach his true potential this season.
Jacobs became a focal point of the team's offensive attack last season, rushing for 1,329 yards and 15 touchdowns on 301 carries. However, despite the Packers 2-1 start to new season, the 27-year-old running back has been unable to continue the success through three games. During this stretch, Jacobs average 3.1 yards per carry, while tallying 180 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 58 carries.
This rough start to his second year with the Packers should not come as a surprise to fans, as Green Bay's first three opponents rank within the top 12 in the NFL when looking at rushing yards allowed per game. Luckily for Jacobs and the rest of the offense, the tides will begin to change on Monday night against the Cowboys.
As the heavy favorites in week four, Dallas' inability to stop a passing attack will be helpful for Jacobs. The Cowboys rank last in passing yards allowed per game this season (288.0), which is a prime opportunity for quarterback Jordan Love to get the Packers off to a hot start at Jerry World. On top of Love putting Green Bay on the right track early on, the defense should once again dominate against an offense that is missing the likes of star wide receiver Ceedee Lamb.
With the organization having multiple advantages heading into Sunday night, Jacobs will benefit and be able to turn around his tough start to the season.
Jacobs may not have faced the Cowboys in his pervious six seasons in the NFL, but Green Bay running backs have had Dallas' number in recent memory. The last time these two teams faced off against each other was in the 2023 Wild Card game, where former Packers' star Aaron Jones Sr. racked up 118 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. Love did an excellent job in this contest as well, recording 272 passing yards and three touchdowns, but Jones' success early on the ground led to the big-time playoff victory.
In addition to the offense finding ways to overcome the Cowboys' defense, Green Bay now possesses one of the best defensive ends in the league, Micah Parsons. The 2021 first-round pick for Dallas played a huge role in the organization's defensive efforts before trading him this offseason to the Packers. And with his departure from the franchise, this puts less pressure on Love within the pocket and allow for Green Bay to get off to a hot start.
While it may not be the Jacobs show to kick off the contest, do not be surprised if the highly-touted running back finishes with his best game of the 2025 season due to the Packers using him to control the clock in the later parts of the game.
