Sean McVay’s latest update suggests the future Hall of Famer is training for a potential comeback, threatening to unite with Myles Garrett and haunt Seattle’s offensive line.
The Seattle Seahawks are already facing a difficult path in the NFC West, and the latest developments surrounding Los Angeles Rams legend Aaron Donald could make their division battle even more challenging.
While Donald has not officially decided whether he will return to the NFL, Rams head coach Sean McVay recently provided another update that suggested the possibility remains on the table.
McVay said Donald is still going through the process of deciding whether he wants to come out of retirement, with the future Hall of Fame defensive tackle evaluating whether his body is ready for another NFL season. Donald has reportedly been following a demanding training routine similar to what he used during his playing career as he determines if a comeback is realistic.
And the latest? He appeared on the NFL official wire on Wednesday as a "workout'' participant with the team.
"There won't be any news on that front until we get back to Woodland Hills," McVay told reporters Friday. "We've loosely had some different timelines that are kind of temporary. I want to keep those between us just if something unforeseen happens, out of respect for him and the situation. But I know this: Things are going in the right direction. And if there's an arrow, it's trending upwards."
For the Seahawks, Donald’s return would represent another major obstacle in a division that has consistently been one of the toughest in football. During his career with the Rams, he earned eight First-Team All-Pro selections, three Defensive Player of the Year awards, and established himself as one of the most disruptive interior defenders in NFL history.
And even though he walked away from the game a few seasons ago, there is no doubt that Donald is still in remarkable shape. So if he did decide to come back, there is a very good chance that he would still be able to hang with how physically dominant he is.
The situation becomes even more concerning because Los Angeles has already made moves to strengthen its defense. The Rams added superstar pass rusher Myles Garrett, creating the possibility of a defensive front featuring two of the most feared pass rushers in football history if Donald chooses to return.
However, Donald’s decision is still unknown, and there is no guarantee he returns to his previous level after spending two seasons away from football. While his talent and preparation have never been questioned, returning to the NFL at 35 years old after retirement would still present challenges.
Until Donald makes his final decision, Seattle will continue preparing for a Rams team that is already expected to be a major contender. But if the legendary defensive tackle does return, the Seahawks’ road through the NFC West could become even more difficult.
