The Seahawks might have slumped to back-to-back defeats, but there was a positive to come out of the Denver loss.
The Seattle Seahawks' 17-14 loss to the Denver Broncos on Thursday night at Empower Field has left many searching for answers, especially on offense, as the champs fell to 3-3.
The defense did more than its fair share, but the offense, led by Sam Darnold, didn't, as they struggled to get anything consistent rolling.
We spoke pre-game about the need for the Seahawks to find another aerial threat besides Jaxon Smith-Njigba, since Denver would likely try to take away No. 11.
While JSN did manage 134 yards on 12 receptions, there were others who helped carry the load in a way he hadn't seen before this season.
Cooper Kupp (5 rec, 50 yards) and Rashid Shaheed (5 rec, 66 yards) both did their part in giving Smith-Njigba support.
And for Seattle Sports' Michael Bumpus, that was a positive to take out of Thursday night's loss. ... and one Seahawks fans hope can carry over into Week 7 vs. the Chiefs.
“Obviously, when you throw the ball 51 times, JSN ain’t gonna get all of it. But we’re still searching for that number two receiver, and we saw some good things on Thursday,” Bumpus said on Seattle Sports’ Bump and Stacy. “Rashid made a big catch down the field. Cooper Kupp was nickel and diming over there. AJ, I’d love to see to see him get more involved.
“But that was encouraging because we’ve shown that someone else can help out, and that’s all you need is five for 60, five for 50, and just be a threat.”
And that is what happened.
The Seahawks, at least in one game, found other avenues for Darnold to go with the football. Granted, it didn't help Seattle win the game, but at least there were signs that others could shoulder the load.
It was easily Shaheed's best game stats-wise (previous best was 35 yards vs. Arizona), and it was Kupp's best return for the year as well.
So that is a small positive if you want to look at it that way, but in truth, the offense wasn't great overall.
But maybe this is something that the Seahawks can hang their hat on moving forward, and if that trio can produce as they did on Thursday night more often, and maybe AJ Barner gets more involved in the passing game, maybe we might see an uptick in form from the offense.
