The Seahawks started the game fast, and Lock was proud of how the backups fared against Tennessee's starters.
NFL preseason is all about players fighting for roster spots, but it is also a chance for backups to get some much-needed work, and for the Seattle Seahawks, in a 19-16 loss, their backups played well...really well.
With Drew Lock at the helm, the Seahawks' backups were going against the Titans' starters, so you could be forgiven for thinking that it might be tough sledding.
It was anything but.
Lock orchestrated a 10-play, 74-yard drive that ended with an Elijah Arroyo 36-yard touchdown pass to start the game fast.
The Titans responded with a field goal, but the Seahawks were full of confidence.
They came right back, and after a Lock scramble on third-and-nine to pick up the first down, running back Jacardia Wright ripped off a 69-yard touchdown run to give the Seahawks a 13-3 lead.
And Lock was lost for words over what he saw his group do to start the game.
"It was awesome," Lock said. "You never know kind of week to week on who you're playing on if starters are going, if starters are not going. When you get a test like that, it just kind of puts real ball on the table and puts some perspective on what we can do in the run game, what we can do in the pass game.
"Just being focused going into the week, man, it was awesome. I'm at a loss for words for how proud of the group that I've been running with in camp, be able to go out there and do what we did in those first couple drives. That was awesome."
With Lock and the backups done for the night at halftime, it was Jalen Milroe and the third- and fourth-string players who got their opportunity, and they were shut out on offense.
Plus, the defense gave up 16 points as the Seahawks lost a game they had in hand.
In truth, the scoreline matters little, but what does matter is the fact that Seattle's backups were able to not only hold their own against the Titans starters, but impose their will, scoring touchdowns on back-to-back drives to start the game.
That's the headline here.
Now, as the third preseason game looms, a lot of the backups are likely to sit as roster cuts loom, and what Lock and his second-team produced in Tennessee might just see them given the night off against the Kansas City Chiefs.
