The Seattle Seahawks bolster their offensive line by trading two mid-round draft picks to the Indianapolis Colts for star lineman Quenton Nelson.
The Indianapolis Colts have traded star offensive guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a third-round draft pick in 2027 and fifth-round pick in 2028, according to ESPN on Tuesday.
Nelson joins the reigning Super Bowl champions after a stellar nine-year career with the Colts that included eight Pro Bowls and three First Team All-Pro honors.
Nelson was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and received each of his All-Pros in the first three seasons of his career.
Nelson is on the final year of his four-year, $80 million rookie extension. With Indianapolis struggling at 2-5 this season and likely out of the playoff picture, the Colts make a move to pick up draft capital for Nelson rather than him departing this free agency without any return.
The move, NFL insider Adam Schefter says, also allows Seattle to move former first-round lineman Grey Zabel from left guard to right guard, where he spent most of his time in college.
Zabel was the Seahawks' No. 18 pick in the first round of the 2025 draft.
The new guard duo figures to be one of the best in the entire NFL, as Nelson and Zabel have combined for just one holding and three false start penalties between them this season.
Furthermore, Nelson's addition is expected to bode well for Seattle's rushing attack. Prospective starter Zach Charbonnet has yet to make his season debut as he returns from knee surgery. Charbonnet has been formally removed from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, and thus far, Seattle has gone with Emanuel Wilson and George Holani as its backfield tandem.
Charbonnet's potential return will be benefited by an elite blocker in front of him in Nelson.
Seattle is firmly in win-now mode and makes a major splash in the trade market to protect quarterback Sam Darnold, who has been plagued by turnovers since returning from the glute injury he sustained in Week 1.
Darnold has been sacked 14 times this season, which is the 12th-most in football. However, he was not taken down by the formidable Kansas City Chiefs defense in Seattle's 20-3 win this past Sunday night.
The Seahawks sit 4-3 on the season and await a matchup with the 5-2 Chicago Bears next Monday night.
