Seattle shattered records to keep their defensive anchor, securing a massive extension that cements the Super Bowl champions' contention window while resetting the market for elite cornerbacks.
This offseason, the Seattle Seahawks knew they had two big contracts they had to take seriously.
One was Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and the other was corner Devon Witherspoon.
With JSN's future being taken care of early in cap, as he put pen to paper on a monster four-year, $168 million deal ($42.12 million APY), many thought that Witherspoon would be done "quickly.''
Well, this weekend, "quickly'' happened soon enough.
And Seattle is earning well-deserved praise for closing the deal to make 'Spoon, at $33 million APY, the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
Of course, things take time, with Devon all along expected to be among the highest-paid corners in football when/if he did get that extension.
And now we know it's a $132 million deal. ... with insider praise for Seattle's work here.
Said our NFL insider Mike Fisher: "The Seahawks are the defending Super Bowl champions who have a sort of 'now' window ... and a way to extend that contention window. This guy fits both.''
Along the way, the player put his nose to the grindstone as a key part of coach Mike Macdonald's defense that will be looking to maintain the rage it had from last season.
Witherspoon wouldn't be human if his contract status wasn't at least in the back of his mind as training camp rolled on.
Think back ... When asked about his contract, he delivered an insight into how he's approaching it.
“I’m not worried about that right now,” Witherspoon said. “I’m out here to focus on making plays and trying to get better day by day. We’ve got other stuff we’re focused on. And ultimately we’re just trying to win games, so that’s what I’m focused on right now.”
The 26-year-old is now wildly wealthy, jumping ahead of the pack.
Denzel Ward and TrentMcDuffie ($31 million APY), Ahmad Gardner and Derek Stingley Jr. ($30 million APY), were always where discussions for an extension are likely to begin for Witherspoon and Seattle.
And now he - and the Seahawks - have exceeded them. All of them.
