Steelers Avoid Potentially Daunting Injury to Wide Receiver cover image

Even after a big win in Dublin, Ireland, the Pittsburgh Steelers averted a major injury.

Calvin Austin III, who Aaron Rodgers has quickly leaned on, was sent to the hospital after the Steelers beat the Minnesota Vikings by the score of 24-21.

You could tell that Austin struggled after a routine play, and at some point it looked like he may have been favoring his chest. But it was later confirmed that he was in a sling prior to going to the hospital.

All seems OK though. Austin recently posted on X that he was A-OK.

Whether that means he’ll be back after Pittsburgh’s bye in Week 5, or if he’ll have to miss a game is to be determined.

Austin’s growth has been a topic of discussion for a little, after Rodgers was seen visibly frustrated with a blown route run in Week 2. However, Rodgers made it clear that he loves having him as a receiver.

This season has been a revelation so far for Austin, posting 126 yards on eight targets, and 15.8 yards per catch.

The Steelers have aggressively been on the hunt for a quality wide receiver so that Austin can be used as a WR3 instead of a WR2, but Austin has been performing so well that they haven’t pulled the trigger.

A certain name that has sprung for the Steelers has been Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins, which would be highly interesting since he has an over the top personality, as well as current Steelers WR1, DK Metcalf.

But it’s hard to ignore the fit. Hill, while not the burner he once was, is still incredibly athletic and can use his speed to separate himself from opposing defensive backs.

Given that the Steelers are 3-1 to start, one has to think that a trade for a wide receiver may be delayed until there are any signs of production dropping.

Another intriguing option could be Rashid Shaheed from the New Orleans Saints.

Shaheed is one of the NFL’s most deadly long-ball threats, and pairing him with Rodgers could be fascinating.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano wondered about him being an option for the Steelers, especially since the Saints are a lost cause this season, and he’s on an expiring contract.

Whether Austin misses a game or not, perhaps a new receiver would be a significant help to a team like Pittsburgh that seems fairly limited in putting points on the board.

As mentioned, the Steelers will be on a bye next week, and their next game will be on Sunday, October 12 against the Cleveland Browns.
