Minnesota Vikings cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. wins NFC defensive player of the week for his strong Week 5 performance against the New Orleans Saints.
The Minnesota Vikings have had a very impressive start as they are now 5-0, and as a result, Minnesota has received recognition as one of the better teams in the NFL. While the offense, defense, and special teams have all played a key role in the strong start, the defense has been the catalyst, as the unit led by Brian Flores has been consistently dominant and effective.
On that note, based on a strong Week 5 performance, Vikings cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. won NFC defensive player of the week.
During the Week 5 matchup against the New Orleans Saints, Murphy was solid all game long as he tallied three tackles which were all solo tackles, one tackle for loss, two pass breakups, and two interceptions.
Focusing on the interceptions, both of Murphy's picks came at key times. The first one came in the third quarter when the Saints were driving and Murphy intercepted quarterback Tyler Shough and was actually able to return it 14 yards. On the second interception, Murphy picked off Shough on the final drive of the game for New Orleans which halted the Saints ability to come back.
So, when analyzing the performance for Murphy in Week 5, it is clear that he was very impressive and, in particular, made two critical plays that took away opportunities for the Saints.
In addition to Murphy having an incredible game, Brian Flores' entire defensive unit played very well as they limited the Saints to 142 yards, which included just 87 passing yards and 55 rushing yards.
To this point, the Vikings defensive unit has been very impressive with the defensive line, linebackers, cornerbacks, and safeties all doing their jobs very effectively which has resulted in this defense being one of the top units in the entire NFL.
When it comes to how this defense operates, it is a lot different than most as Flores is a very aggressive play caller which is demonstrated by how much this defense decides to blitz.
Through the first five weeks, according to Sharp Football Analysis, the Vikings are blitzing on 66.5 percent of snaps, which is by far the most, as the Washington Commanders have the second-highest rate with a blitz percentage of 43.2 percent.
While that may seem overly aggressive from Flores, that has been his philosophy for a lot of his time as a defensive coordinator because it enables him to force quick reads from quarterbacks, confuse offensive lines, which very often leads to turnovers, and has been a major reason for the success this year.
So, as the Vikings head into their bye week, if they can get all their players healthy, continue trending in the right direction on offense and playing consistently on special teams, and have dominating performances from this defense, Minnesota really could be a true NFC contender.
