After having her first baby earlier this year, many were counting Shelby Meged out of the race to make it to her 7th NFBR, but after a big comeback and a clean sweep in Caldwell, she is right back into the mix of things.
As we are just a little over a month away from September 30th wrapping up the year for the PRCA and WPRA, everyone is watching that bubble race right now to see what it is going to take to be in that top 15. Arguably one of the best races to watch right now is in the ladies breakaway roping. It has been shifting and changing all year long, and there are so many talented ladies with the ability to get it done.
Shelby Boisjoli Meged has been one of the best for a long time. She was one of the top 15 to make it to the first NFBR in Globe Life Field back in 2020. Every year since, Shelby has made to the finals, and finished in the top 15 in the world. In 2023, she became a World Champion. Although that may have been the biggest day in her career, a more exciting and rewarding day came in 2026.
This year, her and her husband, tie down roper Haven Meged, welcomed their first baby boy into the world. Wylder Meged took their hearts and their priorities were forever changed. Now, the gold buckles were a little less shiny, and their goals inside the arena were a little less important. However, that did not mean that they were going to quit their first love either.
Haven has continued to rodeo all year long and right now sits number 2 in the PRCA World Standings tie down roping. He is chasing his second gold buckle, and has had an outstanding year doing so.
Shelby started the season off strong in the winter. The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo was the last calf she roped before going on maternity leave. She was sitting in the top 5 in the world when she hung up the ropes for awhile. In the tough field of ladies that are out there though, that wasn't enough to hold her spot.
As Shelby made her return in July after having Wylder, things started a little slow. Some may have even began to count her out of the race, but you can never do that with someone as talented and able as Shelby.
Before Caldwell, Idaho, Meged was ranked 19th in the WPRA World Standings. She had a little less than $65,000 in winnings, and number 15 was Beau Peterson with about $75,000. Caldwell was the big win she needed. Not only did Shelby capitalize, but she won both rounds and the average. That clean sweep helped her win over $13,000, putting her back unofficially in the top 15 in the world.
This is a great story, but not really a comeback at all. Shelby never stopped being great, and the only reason she took a break from what she does best is to become a mom. There is no greater thing in the world for Shelby to step away from the arena for. Now, she and Haven are back to their winning ways together, and doing so with baby Wylder in tow.
This December, there is a great chance we will see Shelby get her 7th NFBR back number. This would make her the only lady to make all 7 and keep her streak alive. Haven will also qualify for another NFR with a World Championship in mind.
