Boosted by a protective bandage, the Algerian international rejoined training after an injury scare, handing Carles Martínez a massive selection boost for October’s demanding fixture schedule.
Bayer Leverkusen have received an encouraging injury update on Ibrahim Maza ahead of Saturday's Bundesliga trip to Mainz, with the Algerian international returning to team training after suffering an ankle injury during the international break.
The 20-year-old had emerged as a major doubt for the match after sustaining a painful knock while representing Algeria. However, examinations have ruled out serious damage, and head coach Carles Martínez has confirmed that the midfielder's condition is improving.
"He's better. We have to check in the training today and then decide whether he's ready for tomorrow,"
Maza's involvement in training is a positive development, although Leverkusen has not yet confirmed whether he will be available against Mainz.
Maza Escapes Serious Ankle Injury
There were initially concerns that Maza could face a significant spell on the sidelines after suffering the injury on international duty.
According to BILD, the midfielder experienced considerable pain immediately after the challenge, but an examination in Leverkusen on Thursday revealed only a bruise.
The report also highlighted a detail that may have helped prevent more serious damage.
Maza regularly wears a tape bandage around his foot for additional stability, and that protection is believed to have reduced the impact of the incident.
Although the initial pain has subsided considerably, the ankle has not been completely free of discomfort.
That explains why Martínez is taking a cautious approach rather than immediately declaring the player available.
Martínez Faces A Late Decision
Maza has become an important part of Leverkusen's attacking structure under Martínez, providing creativity and movement between midfield and attack.
His ability to receive possession in tight spaces and carry the ball into dangerous areas has given Bayer another dimension in the final third.
Losing him would therefore be an unwelcome setback, particularly after Christian Kofane was ruled out for several weeks with a muscle injury in his left thigh.
Unlike Kofane, however, Maza appears to have avoided a lengthy absence.
The decision now depends on how his ankle responds to the demands of training and whether he can play without significant discomfort.
Die Werkself have little reason to take unnecessary risks, especially with seven competitive fixtures scheduled across a demanding October.
Positive News During Contract Discussions
The injury update comes during an important week for Maza's future at the BayArena. Leverkusen have opened negotiations over a contract extension with the Algerian international.
According to Sky Sport Germany, the first discussions have already taken place, and Maza is receptive to committing his future to the club despite interest from several Premier League sides.
That makes his fitness particularly important to Bayer, which increasingly views him as central to its long-term sporting plans.
For now, the focus is on Saturday.
Martínez will make a final assessment of Maza's condition before deciding whether the midfielder can feature against Mainz.
The encouraging news is that Leverkusen are dealing with a short-term fitness concern rather than the serious injury initially feared.
From here the stage only gets bigger.
