As Martín Demichelis faces mounting pressure, the Bundesliga side weighs a tactical shift toward the former Liverpool boss to revitalize their high-intensity identity and develop emerging talents.
Julian Nagelsmann is not the only high-profile coach being considered at RB Leipzig. According to our sources, former Liverpool manager Arne Slot is also among the names being discussed as the club evaluates its long-term coaching options.
The information adds another dimension to the uncertainty surrounding Martín Demichelis, whose opening six competitive matches have produced three victories and three defeats.
Sky Sport Germany reported on Thursday that Nagelsmann remains highly regarded by influential figures within Leipzig's leadership, particularly Oliver Mintzlaff. Now Roundtable understands that Slot is another candidate attracting attention.
That does not mean Leipzig have decided to replace Demichelis. The Argentine retains the confidence of the club's hierarchy, and Roundtable has not established that formal negotiations with Slot have taken place.
But the presence of two established coaches in the conversation raises an interesting question: what kind of manager would the Roten Bullen want if they eventually decided to make another change?
Why Slot Makes Sense For Leipzig
On a tactical level, Slot represents an intriguing possibility.
His reputation was built at Feyenoord, where he developed a team capable of pressing aggressively, dominating possession and creating chances through coordinated movement.
Those principles are familiar to Leipzig.
The club's football identity has traditionally revolved around intensity, vertical attacking and winning possession high up the pitch. Slot's teams have demonstrated many of those characteristics, although his approach also places considerable emphasis on controlled build-up and positional discipline. It is precisely the kind of balance Leipzig were hoping to find under Demichelis.
That combination could make Slot particularly attractive to the club.
The challenge facing Demichelis is not simply to produce results, but to establish a recognisable playing style that makes the most of a squad filled with young, technically gifted attacking players. Slot has already proven that he can do exactly that. He has also won league titles in two different countries, something that could carry significant weight at a club whose ultimate ambition is to win the Bundesliga for the first time.
However, tactical compatibility alone does not guarantee that Slot would be the right appointment. Implementing a new system midway through a season would present considerable challenges.
Nagelsmann Offers Something Different
Nagelsmann's appeal is easier to understand.
He knows Leipzig, understands the Red Bull football structure and has already demonstrated that he can compete at the highest level with the club.
Between 2019 and 2021, he guided Leipzig to the Champions League semi-finals and a second-place Bundesliga finish before departing for Bayern Munich.
According to Sky, Nagelsmann is aware of the speculation surrounding a possible return and has not ruled it out.
There have been no talks, however, and Premier League interest could complicate any potential approach.
Where Slot would represent a new direction, Nagelsmann would offer continuity with one of Leipzig's most successful periods.
Their tactical approaches are not identical, either.
Nagelsmann has historically shown greater willingness to change formations and defensive structures depending on the opponent. Slot generally places more emphasis on establishing repeatable positional patterns within a clearly defined framework.
Both approaches have advantages.
For Leipzig, the more important question would be which philosophy best suits the squad the club is building.
Roger Schmidt Could Influence The Decision
Any future coaching decision would also involve Roger Schmidt, who officially replaced Jürgen Klopp as Red Bull's Head of Global Soccer on October 1.
Schmidt visited Leipzig this week and outlined his intention to support coaches while strengthening cooperation between Red Bull's international clubs.
His arrival adds another experienced football figure to an already influential leadership structure and Demichelis has little time to silence the speculation.
Leipzig host Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday before facing PSV Eindhoven, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in a demanding sequence.
Those matches will provide a clearer picture of how the team performs against stronger opposition and whether the coach's tactical ideas are beginning to take hold.
A convincing response could strengthen Demichelis' position and reduce the urgency surrounding potential replacements.
Another series of disappointing performances, however, would inevitably increase scrutiny.
Nagelsmann and Slot are now both part of the wider conversation, the stakes surrounding Leipzig's October fixtures have become even clearer.
From here the stage only gets bigger.
