The former Salzburg coach returns to lead global operations, prioritizing cross-club collaboration while evaluating a coaching crisis at Leipzig following Jürgen Klopp’s departure from the role.

Roger Schmidt has outlined his vision for Red Bull's international football operations during a visit to RB Leipzig, offering the first indications of how he intends to approach his new position.

The 59-year-old officially succeeded Jürgen Klopp as Head of Global Soccer on October 1, taking responsibility for supporting Red Bull's football clubs and strengthening cooperation across the organisation.

Speaking during his return to Leipzig, Schmidt expressed his enthusiasm about rejoining a football structure he knows well from his time at Red Bull Salzburg.

"Coming back is a wonderful feeling for me. I had a very beautiful and special time in Salzburg."

Roger Schmidt told RB Leipzig.

His arrival comes at a particularly important moment for the German side, where Martín Demichelis is facing growing scrutiny following an inconsistent start to the season.

Schmidt Returns With A Different Perspective

Schmidt's relationship with Red Bull stretches back to his successful period as Salzburg head coach between 2012 and 2014.

During those two seasons, he helped establish the aggressive, high-intensity playing style that became closely associated with Red Bull's football identity.

His subsequent career took him to Bayer Leverkusen, PSV Eindhoven and Benfica, providing experience across several major European leagues.

Now he returns in a different capacity.

"Since then, I've always followed Leipzig's development and how Red Bull has progressed internationally... The years that have passed have perhaps allowed me to gain the experience I need for my current role."

Schmidt explained.

Rather than focusing on one dressing room, Schmidt will now work across several clubs, supporting sporting departments and coaches while helping shape the organisation's long-term direction.

Cooperation Will Be A Priority

One of Schmidt's clearest messages concerned the relationship between Red Bull's clubs.

"Building connections between the clubs is one of the most important tasks of our global team,"

He added.

Schmidt believes the different football departments can benefit from closer collaboration, particularly in areas where sharing expertise and resources can improve sporting development.

"There are areas of joint work where we can support each other and provide mutual benefit."

Roger Schmidt.

His approach also appears to place considerable emphasis on working alongside existing staff rather than imposing immediate changes.

"I'm looking forward to supporting my colleagues and coaches, and sharing my experiences with them."

He added.

That philosophy is particularly relevant to RB Leipzig, where the club has undergone significant changes both on and off the pitch.

Demichelis Faces An Important Period

Schmidt's arrival coincides with mounting questions about Martín Demichelis' position.

Die Roten Bullen have recorded three victories and three defeats in their opening six competitive matches, and the Argentine faces a demanding October schedule featuring Eintracht Frankfurt, PSV Eindhoven, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid.

The same report suggested that Julian Nagelsmann remains admired by influential figures within the Red Bull organisation, although there have been no talks about a potential return.

Schmidt's latest public comments do not address either Demichelis or Nagelsmann directly.

They do, however, offer an indication of how he sees his responsibilities.

His emphasis is on supporting coaches, strengthening relationships and making use of the experience he has accumulated throughout his career.

A New Chapter For Red Bull

Replacing Klopp places Schmidt in one of the most influential positions within Red Bull's football operations.

The former Liverpool manager brought enormous international recognition to the role, while Schmidt arrives with extensive coaching experience and an existing understanding of the organisation.

For the German side, that combination could prove valuable during a period of uncertainty.

The club needs greater consistency on the pitch, but Schmidt's responsibilities extend well beyond the immediate results of one team.

His first comments suggest he wants to build stronger connections throughout Red Bull's international network while providing practical support to those working within it.

How that approach translates into sporting decisions will become clearer over the coming months.

For now, Schmidt has returned to familiar surroundings with a considerably broader responsibility.

From here the stage only gets bigger.
